If you’ve ever seen photos of colorful fireworks exploding above the Han River with Seoul’s skyline glowing underneath, there’s a good chance they were taken during the Seoul International Fireworks Festival. It is one of the biggest events on Seoul’s annual calendar, and experiencing it in person is very different from simply seeing photos online.
As the afternoon arrives, people begin settling along the Han River. Families bring picnic mats and snacks. Friends find places to sit. Photographers prepare their cameras. Visitors take photos of the skyline while waiting for sunset. Then, after dark, the sky over the Han River becomes the main attraction.
But there is something I would tell any first-time visitor before going:
The fireworks themselves are the easy part.
The challenging part is getting to your viewing area, finding a comfortable place to watch, dealing with the enormous crowd, and getting back to your hotel afterward. I’ve spent years traveling around Korea, and one thing I’ve learned about major Seoul events is that your transportation plan matters almost as much as the event itself.
For the 2026 Seoul International Fireworks Festival, the main festival will be centered around Yeouido Hangang Park on Saturday, September 5. Nodeul Island is different this year: the entire island will operate as the Orange Play Zone, and entry requires a ticket purchased in advance.
So if you’re planning to see the fireworks during your Korea trip, don’t just search for “best fireworks spot” and show up at the last minute. The main festival area is Yeouido Hangang Park, beside the Han River. If you’ve found older articles mentioning September 27 or October, make sure you’re looking at the correct year. The 2025 festival was held on September 27, while the 2026 festival is scheduled for September 5.
That means the 2026 fireworks take place relatively early in September.
If your Korea trip happens to overlap with this weekend, I would definitely consider adding the fireworks to your Seoul itinerary.
However, I wouldn’t plan your entire day around arriving just before the fireworks.
The festival atmosphere starts much earlier, and the official Seoul information notes that the event opens with daytime programs before the main fireworks later in the evening.
🌤️ What is September weather like?
September can still feel warm in Seoul, particularly during the afternoon. Even though the fireworks take place in early September, you may still want to dress for warm daytime temperatures rather than cool autumn weather. Much earlier than you probably think.
If you arrive at Yeouido shortly before the fireworks, you may find yourself walking through an enormous crowd while trying to locate somewhere to sit.

The main festival area is Yeouido Hangang Park, along the Han River.
The main viewing area is around the river between the Mapo Bridge and Hangang Railway Bridge, with other viewing opportunities available across the river.
A major landmark nearby is the 63 Building, which is one reason the Yeouido area is so recognizable in photographs.

One thing tourists should understand is that Yeouido Hangang Park is huge.
Searching simply for “Yeouido Hangang Park” on your map doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll arrive at the exact area where you want to watch the fireworks.
On festival day, access routes can also change because of crowd-control and traffic measures. For that reason, I recommend checking your route again before leaving your hotel.
Don’t rely on one entrance.
Don’t rely on one subway station.
And don’t assume the shortest route on your map will still be the easiest route when thousands of people are heading toward the same area.
4. 👀 Best Free Viewing Spots for Seoul Fireworks Festival 2026
There isn’t one single “best” place to watch the Seoul fireworks.
Your ideal spot depends on what you want.
Do you want the full festival atmosphere?
Do you want better photographs?
Do you want to be closer to the fireworks?
Or would you rather have more breathing room?
Here are the areas I would consider.
🥇 1. Yeouido Hangang Park — Best for the Full Festival Experience
If you’re visiting Seoul for the first time and want to experience the fireworks the way most people imagine them, Yeouido Hangang Park is the obvious choice.
You’re on the main side of the festival.
You’ll have the Han River in front of you, fireworks above you, and thousands of people around you.
There is something special about experiencing that atmosphere in person.
The downside?
It gets extremely crowded.
That’s why I would never recommend arriving shortly before the fireworks.
If Yeouido is your choice, make an afternoon of it.
-Bring snacks.
-Bring a picnic mat.
-Take photos.
-Relax.
And once you’ve found a good viewing position, stay there.
Best for:
First-time visitors
Families
Travelers who want the classic atmosphere
People who don’t mind large crowds
🥈 2. Ichon Hangang Park — Best for Photography
If you’re more interested in photography, Ichon Hangang Park is the viewing area I would seriously consider. You’re across the Han River from Yeouido, which gives you a completely different perspective.
Instead of photographing only fireworks, you can potentially include:
Fireworks + Han River + Yeouido skyline + Seoul
in the same frame.
That’s what makes Ichon particularly attractive for photographers. It’s also a good alternative if you don’t want to stand directly inside the main Yeouido festival area. However, don’t mistake “alternative” for “quiet.”
Ichon is also popular, especially among people looking for photographs. So yes, arrive early here too.

🥉 3. Wonhyo Bridge Area — Riverside Alternative
The area around Wonhyo Bridge can be another option for visitors looking for a riverside viewpoint. The important thing here is not to choose a spot simply because someone online called it a “secret fireworks location.”
Walk around the area and look at the actual view.
Ask yourself:
Can I see the river clearly?
Are there trees blocking my view?
Can I comfortably sit here?
Most importantly:
Can I get out afterward?
That last question is one many visitors forget. A viewing spot might have an amazing view but become extremely difficult to leave when tens of thousands of people begin moving toward the same exits.
Best for:
Alternative viewpoints
Visitors who want to stay around the main area
Travelers willing to explore before settling down
4. 🌉 Mapo Bridge Area — Wider Riverside Perspective
The Mapo Bridge area can offer another perspective of the fireworks. However, be careful about assuming that every section of the bridge or nearby road will be accessible. Festival-day pedestrian and traffic controls can change.
Always follow directions from police, event staff and safety personnel. Don’t try to cross into restricted areas just because they appear to offer a better photograph.

Wider views
Travelers who want some distance from the main crowd
Photographers looking for different compositions
5. 🌿 Farther Han River Parks — Best for More Space
If you absolutely hate crowds, you don’t have to force yourself into the center of the festival. You can choose a viewing area farther away from the main festival zone.
The trade-off is straightforward:
Closer = bigger fireworks + more people
Farther = smaller fireworks + more space
Personally, I would rather have a slightly smaller view and be comfortable than spend the entire evening squeezed into an enormous crowd.

5. 🎟️ Do You Need Tickets for Seoul Fireworks Festival?
No—not for general public viewing. You can watch the fireworks from public areas around the Han River without purchasing a general admission ticket.
However, there is an important change for 2026:
🏝️ Nodeul Island is a Ticketed Orange Play Zone
Do not assume that Nodeul Island is simply another free viewing area this year.
According to the official 2026 announcement, the entire Nodeul Island area will operate as the Orange Play Zone, and only people who purchased tickets in advance can enter.
The Orange Play Zone begins operating from 1:00 PM on September 5, with food and beverage options, performances, activities and other programs before the fireworks. The official organizer also warns that Nodeul Island is not directly in the main frontal viewing area and that parts of the view may be limited depending on the location.
So I would not automatically assume:
Paid = better view.
Instead, think of it as:
Paid = more controlled and organized experience.
If you want a free experience, Yeouido and other public riverside areas remain the better option.
6. 🚇 How to Get to Seoul Fireworks Festival by Subway
For tourists, public transportation is the best option. I strongly recommend avoiding a private car.
The official festival information confirms that traffic control will be implemented around Yeouido on September 5. The controlled section of Yeouidong-ro between the south end of Mapo Bridge and the area in front of the 63 Building is scheduled to be closed from 3:00 PM to midnight. The festival’s official FAQ also says the parking area in front of the 63 Building at Yeouido Hangang Park will be temporarily closed from September 4 at 6:00 PM through September 5 at midnight. So even if you’re comfortable driving in Seoul, this is not the night I would recommend doing it.
🚇 Yeouinaru Station — Line 5
This is one of the most obvious stations for Yeouido Hangang Park. The problem is that it is also one of the stations most visitors will think of first. When crowd levels become extremely high, access can be restricted.The Seoul Metropolitan Government specifically warns that Yeouinaru Station may be bypassed or have entrances controlled when congestion becomes severe.
So:
Don’t make Yeouinaru your only plan.
🚇 Yeouido Station — Lines 5 & 9
Yeouido Station is another practical option for reaching the festival area.
It may require more walking than simply exiting at Yeouinaru, but that can actually be an advantage when the closest station becomes extremely crowded.
🚇 Saetgang Station — Line 9
Saetgang can be a useful alternative for visitors approaching the Yeouido side.
Again, check the walking route before leaving your hotel.
🚇 Daebang Station — Line 1
Daebang is farther away, but sometimes farther is better.
After the fireworks, walking farther to a less crowded station may be much easier than trying to squeeze into the closest station.
🚇 Ichon Station — Line 4 & Gyeongui-Jungang Line
If you’re watching from Ichon Hangang Park, Ichon Station is the obvious choice.
This is another reason I like Ichon for photography—it gives you a clear alternative to the main Yeouido side.
7. 🚶 My Subway Strategy for Fireworks Night
Here’s what I would personally do.
Before the fireworks:
Take the subway toward your chosen viewing area early.
Before sunset:
Make sure you already know your route back.
During the fireworks:
Stay where you are.
Immediately afterward:
-Don’t run toward the closest station.
-Wait.
-Pack your belongings.
-Let some people leave.
-Then start walking toward your planned station.
This can make a surprisingly big difference.
8. 🚫 Which Areas Should Tourists Be Careful Around?
The biggest mistake is arriving late and assuming you can simply walk into the main viewing area. You may find yourself moving extremely slowly through crowds.
❌ Yeouinaru Station after the fireworks
This is likely to be one of the busiest areas.
Access may also be controlled depending on crowd density.
❌ Main Yeouido riverside shortly before the show
If you arrive too late, finding a comfortable viewing spot can be difficult.
❌ Roads around Yeouido
Traffic restrictions make driving inconvenient.
❌ Leaving immediately after the fireworks
This is when the crowd begins moving all at once.
If possible, stay around 20–30 minutes after the show.
There is also an official 10-minute cleanup period after the fireworks, during which visitors are encouraged to clean their area.
9. 📸 Best Spots for Photos and Videos
Your best location depends on what you want to photograph.
📸 Best for Skyline Photos: Ichon Hangang Park
Ichon is my choice for photography.
The distance gives you the opportunity to capture more of Seoul in one frame.
Try photographing:

Han River
Yeouido skyline
Reflections on the water
Instead of simply pointing your camera toward the sky, include something recognizable from Seoul.
That makes the photograph feel like a Seoul travel memory, not just a fireworks picture.
🎆 Best for Bigger Fireworks: Yeouido
If you want the fireworks to dominate your photos and videos, Yeouido puts you closer to the main viewing area.
You’ll get a more dramatic perspective.
The downside?
More people.
And lots of phones will probably appear in your frame.
📱 Quick Fireworks Photography Tips
Before the show:
Clean your camera lens
Fully charge your phone
Bring a power bank
Avoid excessive digital zoom
Keep your camera stable
Take both horizontal and vertical photos
Record several short videos
Don’t spend the entire show looking at your screen
If you’re using a smartphone, test your camera settings before the fireworks begin.
Once the first fireworks explode, you’ll have very little time to experiment.
And honestly?
Don’t watch the entire show through your phone.
-Take a few photos.
-Record a few clips.
-Then put it down.
The actual view is much better than the one on your screen.

If the fireworks are one of the main reasons for your Seoul trip, hotel location can make your evening significantly easier. After spending several hours outside, the last thing you want is a long journey across Seoul while surrounded by exhausted crowds.

If convenience is your priority, Yeouido is my first choice. You can stay relatively close to the festival and potentially walk back to your hotel after the fireworks.

Don’t automatically assume that rain means the festival is cancelled. The official festival FAQ states that the schedule may be changed if severe weather is forecast. Visitors should check the official announcements before traveling.
For a rainy forecast, bring:
Personally, I prefer a rain jacket.
With thousands of people around you, an umbrella can block the view of people behind you and become difficult to manage in a crowded area. The important thing is to check the weather on the actual day rather than relying on an old forecast.
12. 🎒 What Should You Bring?
You may spend several hours outside, so pack for comfort.
My essentials:
Don’t overpack.
You’ll be carrying your belongings for hours, and navigating a huge crowd is much easier when you have a small, manageable bag.
The official festival safety guide also asks visitors to use designated clean zones, avoid sitting in walking paths, avoid personal tents and observe restrictions on bicycles and inline skates.

The crowd will continue growing.

Clean your lens.
Charge your phone.
Open your camera.
Decide whether you want horizontal or vertical footage.
Evening — Fireworks
Enjoy the show.
Take your photos.
But remember to actually watch it.
After the fireworks — Don’t rush
Pack slowly.
Clean your area.
Wait for the first crowd to move.

Should I stay near Yeouido?
If the fireworks are one of the main reasons for your Seoul trip, staying near Yeouido can make your return much easier.
If you’re doing a normal Seoul sightseeing itinerary, however, you don’t necessarily need to change hotels.
Myeongdong, Yongsan and other central areas can work perfectly well.
🎆 Final Thoughts: Is Seoul Fireworks Festival 2026 Worth It?
Yes—but go prepared.
That’s probably the biggest thing I want you to remember. The Seoul International Fireworks Festival isn’t the kind of event where you can casually arrive 30 minutes before the show, find a perfect spot and immediately catch a taxi afterward.
It is much bigger than that.
For several hours, the Han River becomes one enormous gathering place.
-People bring food.
-Friends sit together.
-Families wait for sunset.
-Photographers prepare their cameras.
-The Seoul skyline slowly changes as daylight disappears.
And then the fireworks begin.
For a first-time visitor, I think Yeouido Hangang Park is worth experiencing at least once if you want the full atmosphere. But if your main goal is photography, I’d seriously consider Ichon Hangang Park.
And if you dislike crowds, don’t force yourself into the busiest section simply because someone online called it the “best spot.”
There isn’t one perfect fireworks location. There is only the location that works best for the kind of evening you want.
❤️ My personal strategy
If I were planning this for a friend visiting Seoul for the first time,
I’d do this:
Afternoon:
Arrive around Yeouido.
↓
Find a comfortable free viewing spot.
↓
Buy food and drinks before the evening rush.
↓
Take photos and enjoy the Han River.
↓
Watch the fireworks.
↓
Stay around 20–30 minutes afterward.
↓
Walk toward a less crowded subway station.
↓
Return to the hotel without rushing.
And if photography were my priority?
I’d choose Ichon.
If convenience were my priority?
I’d stay around Yeouido or Yongsan.
If my budget were tight?
I’d choose a free viewing area and arrive early.
The important thing is not to let the crowds completely put you off.
-Yes, it will be busy.
-Yes, transportation will take more planning.
-Yes, you’ll probably spend several hours waiting.
But when the first fireworks explode over the Han River and the Seoul skyline lights up behind them, you’ll understand why so many people make this an annual tradition. For travelers visiting Seoul in early September, it can be one of those nights that becomes a highlight of the entire Korea trip. 🇰🇷🎆

The official festival organizer currently confirms that Nodeul Island is fully operated as the ticketed Orange Play Zone, rather than being a normal free public viewing area. The organizer also confirms the September 5 date and current traffic-control information.
