🍂 Best Areas to Stay in Korea for Autumn Foliage — Where to Stay by Destination

Planning a trip to Korea during autumn? If seeing the fall colors is one of the reasons you’re coming, where you stay can make a bigger difference than you might expect.

Autumn is one of my favorite times to be in Korea. The weather is much nicer for walking, cafés are busy but not quite as hectic as summer, and familiar places suddenly look completely different once the leaves start changing.

One day you might be walking past Gyeongbokgung Palace with yellow ginkgo leaves covering the ground. A few weeks later, the mountains around Naejangsan will be covered in red and orange. Nami Island has its own autumn atmosphere, while Jeju feels completely different again.

The leaves don’t change across Korea all at once. That matters when choosing where to stay. Seoul works well when most of your plans are in the city. But when Nami Island or Naejangsan is one of the main reasons for the trip, staying closer to those areas can save a very early start and a long journey back at night.

Before choosing your dates, have a look at my 🍁 2026 Korea Autumn Foliage Forecast: When & Where to See Peak Fall Colors. It shows the expected timing across different parts of Korea so you can match your plans with the places you want to see.

Here are six destinations to consider for an autumn Korea trip:

🍁 Where to Stay in Korea for Autumn Foliage

Destination

Recommended area

Nights

Good for

🇰🇷 Seoul

Jongno / Insadong

3–5

Palaces, parks, cafés and city foliage

🍁 Nami Island

Gapyeong

1–2

Nami Island and nearby autumn spots

🏯 Jeonju

Hanok Village

1–2

Traditional streets, food and hanok stays

🌊 Busan

Haeundae

2–3

Coast, temples and city sightseeing

🌾 Jeju

Seogwipo

3–4

Hallasan, nature and road trips

🍂 Naejangsan

Jeongeup / Naejangsan area

1–2

Maple foliage and mountain scenery

You don’t need to visit all six.

Spending more time in three places can be much more enjoyable than packing, checking out and moving to another hotel every couple of days.

🇰🇷 1. Seoul — Stay Around Jongno or Insadong

Changdeokgung Palace Secret Garden surrounded by autumn foliage
🍁 Changdeokgung Palace Secret Garden is especially beautiful when the autumn colors arrive.

If it’s your first time in Korea, you’ll probably spend several days in Seoul, so choosing the right area can make your trip much easier.

For an autumn trip, I really like Jongno and Insadong because so many places are close together. You can spend the morning visiting a palace, stop for lunch, walk through traditional streets, take a café break, and still have plenty of time for an evening stroll without spending half the day traveling across Seoul.

A simple autumn day could be:

Gyeongbokgung → lunch in Jongno → Bukchon → Insadong café → evening walk

And when you want to explore farther, the subway makes it easy to reach other parts of the city.

🍂 Autumn places nearby

  • Gyeongbokgung Palace

  • Changdeokgung Palace

  • Bukchon Hanok Village

  • Deoksugung Stone Wall Road

  • Namsan

  • N Seoul Tower

  • Seoul Forest

  • Olympic Park

You don’t need to stay right beside every attraction on your list. I would focus more on finding a hotel near a convenient subway station, especially if you plan to visit different parts of Seoul.

🍁 Easy Autumn Day Trips from Seoul

Seoul is also a good base if you want to add a few autumn day trips to your itinerary. You can return to the same hotel each night instead of moving your luggage between cities. Popular options include Nami Island, Hwadam Forest, Pocheon, and Suwon, while travelers who want to see more dramatic mountain foliage can consider longer trips to Naejangsan or Seoraksan.

Some day trips work better depending on the timing of the autumn foliage, so check the travel time and seasonal conditions before booking.

🏨 How many nights should you stay?

I’d plan around 3–5 nights in Seoul.

Three nights is enough for the main sights if your schedule is tight. Four or five nights gives you more breathing room for cafés, shopping, neighborhoods and an autumn day trip without making every day feel rushed.

Jongno and Insadong have plenty of choices, from small guesthouses to larger hotels. Personally, I would prioritize location, cleanliness and access to the subway over having a fancy room.

If you’re going to be outside most of the day exploring Seoul, there’s not much benefit in paying a lot more for a hotel room you’ll barely use.

For a wider comparison of Seoul neighborhoods, see Best Areas to Stay in Seoul for First-Time Visitors. Solo travelers can also check Where to Stay in Seoul Alone for more budget-friendly options.

When I search for a Seoul hotel, I usually search by neighborhood first, rather than simply searching for “Seoul hotel.” Looking at the map, recent guest reviews and the walking distance to the nearest subway station can tell you much more about whether a hotel will actually be convenient for your trip.

🍁 2. Nami Island & Gapyeong — Stay in Gapyeong for a Less Rushed Visit

Sky Bike at Nami Island surrounded by colorful autumn foliage
🍁Add something a little different to your Nami Island day trip with a Sky Bike ride.

Nami Island is one of Korea’s most popular autumn spots, especially when the trees along the walking paths start changing color.

You don’t have to stay in Seoul for the whole visit.

When Nami Island is a major part of your autumn plans, spending a night in Gapyeong means you won’t have to travel out from Seoul and then make the same journey back after a full day.

Instead, the morning starts much closer to the attractions.

🍂 Places to combine with Nami Island

  • Garden of Morning Calm

  • Jarasum

  • Gapyeong Rail Bike

  • Petite France

  • Riverside areas around Gapyeong

Nami Island also works as a day trip from Seoul, so an overnight stay isn’t necessary. It simply gives you another way to plan the trip.

📍 Where to stay

Good areas to search include:

You’ll find pensions, guesthouses, family stays and riverside properties in the area. Transportation matters more here than it may seem.

A beautiful pension surrounded by trees sounds great until you realize you need a taxi every time you want to go somewhere.

1–2 nights is enough for most visits. One night works for Nami Island and another nearby attraction, while two nights leaves room for places such as Garden of Morning Calm. Gapyeong can get busy around peak foliage, especially on weekends. With fixed travel dates, booking accommodation early can save you from having to choose between the remaining properties.

For Gapyeong, location comes before hotel facilities. Being close to a station, ferry area or transport connection can make a much bigger difference than having a larger room.

👉 Check Gapyeong hotels on Agoda

🎟️ Nami Island activities

For travelers who don’t want to arrange every part of the journey themselves, options include:

  • Nami Island tours

  • Nami Island + Garden of Morning Calm packages

  • Transportation packages

  • Guided day trips

Before booking a tour, read the meeting point and return time carefully. A cheap tour isn’t much help when the schedule doesn’t fit your plans.

🏯 3. Jeonju — Stay in Hanok Village

Jeonju Hanok Village surrounded by autumn foliage
🏯 Autumn adds a beautiful seasonal touch to Jeonju’s traditional hanok streets.

Jeonju isn’t a place I’d visit only for autumn foliage. For me, the real charm is the slow pace, traditional streets and food.

Jeonju Hanok Village has traditional houses, cafés, restaurants and cultural spots, and autumn is a nice time to explore everything on foot. Your accommodation can also be part of the experience.

🏡 Why stay in a hanok?

If you’ve never stayed in a traditional Korean house, Jeonju is a good place to try it. Just remember that hanok stays are different from regular hotels. Rooms can be smaller, some use floor bedding, and facilities vary, so check the photos and recent reviews before booking.

🍂 Places to visit

  • Gyeonggijeon Shrine

  • Omokdae

  • Jeonju Hyanggyo

  • Jeonjucheon Stream

  • Jaman Mural Village

  • Hanok Village streets

You don’t really need a strict schedule here. Walk around, grab some food, stop at a café, take photos and explore at your own pace.

👘 Rent a Hanbok

Since you’re already in Hanok Village, renting a hanbok in Jeonju is a fun addition. You can walk around the traditional streets wearing it and take photos with the autumn scenery.

🚆 Jeonju as a day trip from Seoul

Don’t have time to stay overnight? Jeonju can also be visited as a day trip from Seoul. The KTX makes it possible to visit Hanok Village, try local food and see the main sights before returning to Seoul.

👉 [Browse Jeonju Day Trips & Activities from Seoul]

If you have more time, I’d stay 1–2 nights instead. One night is enough to see the main sights, while two nights gives you more time to enjoy the food, cafés and slower pace.

👉 Check Jeonju hotels and hanok stays on Agoda

And don’t forget to eat. Jeonju is famous for bibimbap, kongnamul-gukbap, pajeon and traditional snacks. For more ideas, see  11 Korean Street Foods First-Time Visitors Should Try.

🌊 4. Busan — Haeundae for the Coast and City

Hotel stay in Busan South Korea during summer travel
🌊 A relaxing stay in Haeundae, one of the most convenient areas to stay in Busan.

Busan feels different from the other places on this list. You can have a beach morning, visit a temple in the afternoon, walk along the coast and finish the day with seafood or a café. There’s no need to choose between the coast and autumn scenery.

🍂 Places to add to your Busan itinerary

  • Haedong Yonggungsa Temple

  • Dalmaji Road

  • Dongbaekseom

  • Haeundae Beach

  • Igidae Coastal Walk

  • Beomeosa Temple

  • Busan parks and walking trails

Haedong Yonggungsa is especially nice because you get the temple, autumn scenery and sea in one outing.

🎟️ Busan activities to add

🚆 Autumn Day Trips from Busan

Busan is also a good base for exploring other parts of southeastern Korea. If you have an extra day, consider:

📍 Why Haeundae?

Haeundae has plenty of hotels, restaurants and transport options, along with the beach and many coastal attractions.

If you’re planning to spend more time around western Busan, another neighborhood may be more convenient. Busan is spread out, so staying on the opposite side of the city can mean spending more time getting around.

For a detailed area comparison, see Best Areas to Stay in Busan for First-Time Visitors. Solo travelers can also read Where to Stay in Busan for Solo Travelers.

2–3 nights is a good range for Busan. Three nights gives you enough time for the main sights, some activities and a little free time without packing every day from morning to night.

Traveling directly from Incheon Airport to Busan? Read Incheon Airport to Busan: Complete Transportation Guide before deciding on your hotel and train schedule.

When comparing Busan hotels, start with the map. An ocean view is nice, but I wouldn’t pay a lot more for it if you’re planning to spend most of your day out exploring.

🌾 5. Jeju — Stay in Seogwipo for a Nature-Focused Trip

Autumn ginkgo trees at Jeju National University
💛 Jeju’s golden ginkgo trees are especially beautiful during autumn.

Jeju deserves some breathing room. The island looks manageable on a map, but driving between different areas can take longer than you might expect. If Hallasan, waterfalls and southern Jeju are part of your plan, Seogwipo makes a practical base.

🍂 Autumn places around Jeju

  • Hallasan

  • Saebyeol Oreum

  • Eoseungsaengak

  • Cheonjiyeon Falls

  • Jeongbang Falls

  • Hallasan-area trails

  • Silver grass fields

Hallasan’s 2026 peak foliage is currently forecast for around November 13, although the actual timing can shift with the weather. For the expected timing across Korea, see 🍁 2026 Korea Autumn Foliage Forecast: When & Where to See Peak Fall Colors.

🚐 Jeju Day Trips & Tours

If you don’t want to drive everywhere yourself, you can also book day tours around the island:

🚗 One thing to check before booking

Renting a car? Don’t forget about parking. It might seem like a small detail when choosing a hotel, but after a full day of driving around Jeju, having a parking space waiting for you is definitely convenient. Your daily route should also help you decide between Jeju City and Seogwipo. For a full comparison, see Best Areas to Stay in Jeju for First-Time Visitors.

3–4 nights gives you enough time to explore without turning the whole trip into one long drive. For Jeju, room price isn’t the only thing to consider — location, parking and driving distance can make a much bigger difference.

👉 Check Jeju hotels on Agoda

🍂 6. Naejangsan & Jeongeup — Stay Close to the Mountain

Autumn foliage and mountain lake scenery at Naejangsan National Park in Korea
Naejangsan is worth considering if autumn foliage is one of the main reasons you're visiting Korea.

Traveling to Korea mainly for deep red maple foliage? Naejangsan deserves a place on your itinerary.

The 2026 forecast puts peak foliage around November 11. It’s only a forecast, but when your dates fall close to that period, staying nearby means more time at the mountain and less time spent traveling back and forth.

🍁 What to see

The scenery here is very different from Seoul.

Instead of palace grounds and city streets, you’ll spend your time around mountains, forest and temples.

🚐 No Overnight? Visit Naejangsan as a Day Trip from Seoul

If you don’t want to change hotels or spend a night in Jeongeup, Naejangsan can also be done as a day trip from Seoul.

It will be a long day, but an organized autumn foliage tour can make it easier since transportation is arranged and you can spend your time at the mountain instead of figuring out the route yourself.

👉 [Browse Naejangsan Autumn Foliage Day Trips from Seoul]

📍 Where to stay

There are fewer accommodation choices around Naejangsan than in Seoul or Busan.

Search around:

  • Naejangsan

  • Jeongeup

  • Nearby pensions

  • Guesthouses

  • Resorts

  • Nature stays

Dates close to peak foliage tend to fill faster, so this is one destination where booking ahead makes sense. 1–2 nights is enough for most visitors. One night works when the mountain is the main focus, while two nights gives you some breathing room in case rain or changing weather affects your plans.

Search both the Naejangsan area and Jeongeup rather than limiting the search to one location. Compare each property’s distance from the places you actually want to visit.

🗺️ Which Destination Fits Your Trip?

Danubi Train at Nami Island during autumn
🍁The Danubi Train is a relaxing way to enjoy Nami Island's colorful autumn scenery.

Foliage doesn’t have to be the only factor.

Think about what you want to do during the rest of the trip too.

If you want…

Consider…

Why

City sightseeing

Seoul

Palaces, parks, food, shopping and public transportation

Famous autumn scenery

Gapyeong

Nami Island and nearby attractions

Traditional Korea

Jeonju

Hanok Village, food and slower days

Coast and autumn together

Busan

Beaches, temples and city life

Nature and a road trip

Jeju

Mountains, waterfalls and open landscapes

Red maple foliage

Naejangsan

Mountain scenery and temples

You don’t need to squeeze every destination into one holiday.

A shorter list of places usually means more time to actually enjoy each one.

🛏️ How Many Nights Should You Spend?

Use these ranges as a guide rather than a strict schedule:

3–5

Gapyeong

1–2

Jeonju

Busan

2–3

Jeju

3–4

Naejangsan

Nobody wants to spend half a holiday packing, checking out and waiting for the next hotel room.

💡 Hotel Tips for Autumn in Korea

1. Don’t plan the whole trip around one foliage date

Forecasts are useful, but weather can shift the timing.

2. Watch the weekends

Popular foliage destinations can get very busy on Saturdays and Sundays.

3. Confirm the actual hotel location

Don’t rely only on phrases such as “near subway” or “central” in the hotel description.

Open the map and see where the property really is.

4. Read recent reviews

Pay attention to comments about:

  • Cleanliness

  • Noise

  • Room size

  • Beds

  • Location

  • Staff

  • Luggage storage

Hotel photos only tell you part of the story.

5. Don’t pay extra for a view you won’t use

Leaving early and returning late? A well-located room may be more useful than an expensive view.

6. Confirm parking on Jeju

Renting a car? Make parking part of the hotel search from the beginning.

7. Read the cancellation rules

This becomes especially useful when your holiday is planned around foliage.

8. Think about transport costs

A cheaper room far from everything can mean more taxis and longer journeys.

9. Book smaller destinations earlier

There aren’t as many accommodation choices around Gapyeong and Naejangsan as there are in Seoul.

🎟️ Should You Book Autumn Activities in Advance?

Hwadam Forest monorail surrounded by colorful autumn maple leaves in South Korea
🍁 Hwadam Forest monorail surrounded by colorful maple leaves during Korea’s autumn foliage season.

Not everything needs to be booked ahead.

For Nami Island, day trips, transportation packages and some seasonal activities, advance booking can save you from sorting everything out on the day.

You can compare Klook options for:

  • Nami Island
  • Nami Island + Garden of Morning Calm
  • Seoul day trips
  • Busan activities
  • Jeju tours
  • Transportation packages
  • Hwadam Forest Daytrip
  • Seasonal attractions

Before booking a tour, read the meeting point, duration, transportation and inclusions.

For destinations outside Seoul, pay attention to the return journey too. Getting there may be straightforward, while getting back isn’t always as convenient.

🍁 What to Wear in Korea During Autumn

Don’t pack only one heavy jacket.

September, October and November can feel quite different, and mornings can be noticeably cooler than afternoons. Layers are much more practical.

Comfortable walking shoes are also important. Autumn trips often involve more walking than people expect, especially around palaces, parks, traditional villages and mountain areas.

🍂 Is Autumn a Good Time to Visit Korea?

2026 Korea autumn foliage forecast and peak foliage dates
🍁 2026 Korea autumn foliage forecast: expected timing for peak fall colors across South Korea.

Yes, but autumn doesn’t look the same everywhere. The colors usually start changing in the mountain areas before moving into lower areas and cities. Early October, late October and November can therefore bring very different scenery.

Choosing between Seoul, Gapyeong, Jeju and Naejangsan? Review the expected foliage timing before deciding where to spend the most nights.

🍁 4 Autumn Korea Routes

1. Seoul → Nami Island → Busan

About 7–10 days

This route includes:

  • Seoul palaces and neighborhoods

  • Nami Island

  • Autumn scenery

  • Korean food

  • Busan’s coast

  • Temples and city views

For a day-by-day plan, see my 🍁 10-Day South Korea Autumn Itinerary: Seoul, Nami Island, Naejangsan & Busan.

2. Seoul → Nami Island → Naejangsan → Busan

This route suits travelers who want autumn scenery to be a bigger part of the holiday.

Seoul parks and palaces → Nami Island → mountain maple foliage → Busan

Timing matters here. The leaves don’t change across the country in one week, so review the expected foliage dates before fixing the route.

3. Seoul → Jeonju → Busan

Travelers who don’t enjoy changing hotels every few days may prefer this route.

More time goes toward walking, eating and exploring instead of checking train schedules and packing another suitcase.

4. Seoul → Jeju

Already spent time in Seoul or looking for a quieter part of the trip? Add several days in Jeju.

Give Jeju at least three nights. Four nights is better for a route that includes several parts of the island.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I stay in Korea for autumn foliage?

Seoul is a practical base because you can combine sightseeing with parks and palace grounds.

When the leaves are the main reason for the trip, Gapyeong and Naejangsan deserve more attention. Staying near the attractions can cut down the amount of time spent traveling.

Should I stay in Seoul or Gapyeong for Nami Island?

Both work.

Seoul makes sense when Nami Island is one day among several Seoul plans.

Gapyeong makes more sense when you want to visit Nami Island along with other nearby attractions and don’t want to travel back to Seoul at night.

How many nights should I spend in Seoul?

For most visitors, 3–5 nights is a comfortable range.

Three nights covers the major sights. Four or five leaves more room for shopping, cafés, neighborhoods and a day trip.

Is Jeonju worth visiting in autumn?

Yes, especially for traditional architecture, Korean food and slower travel.

The attraction isn’t just the foliage. The hanok streets, food and cooler weather are a big part of the experience.

Where should I stay in Busan?

Haeundae is a practical base because there are plenty of hotels, restaurants and transport options.

When most of the itinerary is in western Busan, another neighborhood may cut down the daily travel time.

Should I stay in Seogwipo or Jeju City?

Choose based on your route.

Seogwipo works well for southern Jeju, waterfalls and Hallasan-area trips.

Jeju City is more useful when most of your plans are in the northern part of the island.

Is Naejangsan worth staying overnight?

When peak maple foliage is one of the main reasons for visiting, an overnight stay can be worthwhile.

You can start earlier and avoid turning the visit into a very long round trip.

When is autumn foliage in Korea in 2026?

The current VisitKorea forecast places first foliage at Seoraksan around October 3, with peak foliage around October 25.

Naejangsan’s peak is currently forecast around November 11, while Hallasan is around November 13.

These are forecasts, not fixed dates, so weather can change the actual timing.

Should I book autumn hotels early?

Smaller destinations are better booked ahead, particularly for weekends around the expected peak.

Gapyeong and the Naejangsan area have fewer accommodation choices than Seoul.

Is it better to stay near a subway station or near an attraction?

For Seoul, good public transportation usually matters more.

For smaller destinations, being closer to the attraction or having reliable transport can make more sense.

Think about where you’ll spend most of the day before choosing the hotel.

🍁 Final Thoughts

You don’t need to stay in the same hotel for your entire Korea trip just for the sake of convenience.

In Seoul, a neighborhood with good transportation makes sense.

Around Nami Island, a night in Gapyeong can make the autumn visit less rushed.

In Jeonju, a hanok stay can become part of the experience itself.

In Busan, Haeundae puts the coast, restaurants and many popular attractions within reach.

In Jeju, give yourself enough nights so the holiday doesn’t turn into one long drive.

And around Naejangsan, staying nearby can be worthwhile when the maple leaves are the main reason you’re going.

You don’t have to chase every autumn destination in Korea.

Pick the places that fit your dates and the kind of trip you actually want. Leave some empty space in your schedule too.

Some of my favorite autumn days in Korea aren’t the ones where I see five attractions. They’re the simple ones—walking through a park, stopping for coffee, taking photos of the leaves and heading back to the hotel when I’m ready.
