Autumn is one of the most beautiful times to visit South Korea. While the cherry blossom season often gets most of the attention, many travelers who have experienced both spring and fall will tell you that Korea’s autumn foliage season is equally breathtaking.
From golden ginkgo-lined streets in Seoul to fiery red mountain valleys covered in maple leaves, Korea transforms into a colorful landscape between late September and early November. The cooler temperatures also make it one of the most comfortable seasons for hiking, sightseeing, and day trips.
Living in Korea, I’ve visited many of these destinations during peak foliage season, and one thing I’ve learned is that timing matters. The colors arrive first in the northern mountain regions before gradually moving south toward Jeju Island. If you’re planning a Korea trip during autumn, knowing where to go and when to visit can make a huge difference.
In this guide, I’ll share some of the best places to see autumn foliage in Korea, including famous destinations like Nami Island and Seoraksan, as well as a few lesser-known spots that deserve a place on your itinerary.
When Is the Best Time to See Autumn Foliage in Korea?
Autumn foliage season in Korea typically begins in the northern mountain regions in early October before gradually moving south through late October and early November.
In general:
- Early October: Seoraksan, Odaesan
- Late October: Nami Island, Garden of Morning calm, Hwadam Botanic Garden, Seoul
- Early November: Naejangsan, Hallasan, Jeju Island
Because weather conditions vary each year, peak foliage dates can shift slightly depending on temperatures and rainfall.

Before planning your autumn foliage itinerary, I recommend arranging two things first: transportation from the airport and internet access during your trip.
If you’re arriving through Incheon Airport, my guide on How to Get from Incheon Airport to Seoul compares AREX, airport buses, taxis, and private transfers.
You’ll also want reliable internet access for checking foliage forecasts, train schedules, and navigation apps. Here’s my guide to the Best SIM Card, eSIM or Pocket WiFi for Korea.
1. Nami Island
Nami Island is arguably Korea’s most famous autumn destination, and for good reason.
During my most recent visit in the first week of November 2024, some of the famous ginkgo trees had already started losing their leaves. Even so, the island was still incredibly beautiful, with plenty of golden and red foliage remaining throughout the walking paths. This experience reminded me that autumn timing can vary slightly each year, so checking the latest foliage forecast before your trip is always worthwhile.
What I personally like about Nami Island is that you don’t need to hike to enjoy the scenery. Families with children, seniors, and travelers who prefer leisurely walks can easily spend half a day exploring the island.
Highlights
Golden ginkgo tree roads
Riverside autumn scenery
Easy walking paths
Cafes and restaurants within the island
Best Time to Visit
Late October to early November
Travel Tip
Arrive before 9 AM if possible. During my visit, I took the first ferry of the day and was able to enjoy many of the island’s most famous photo spots before the crowds arrived. The quieter atmosphere made a noticeable difference, especially along the tree-lined roads.
I ended up spending almost an entire day on the island. Beyond walking the main paths, I rode the Story Tour Bus, took the charity train, relaxed by the riverside, and explored several areas multiple times. Many visitors only stay a few hours, but Nami Island can easily fill a full day if you enjoy photography, leisurely walks, and scenic cafes.
If you’re visiting independently, Nami Island is accessible by train and ferry from Seoul. However, many travelers find the journey easier with a Nami Island day tour package or a round-trip shuttle bus from Seoul, especially during the busy autumn foliage season when transportation can be crowded.
A round-trip shuttle is usually the most convenient option if your main goal is to enjoy the autumn scenery without worrying about train schedules or transfers. For travelers who want to visit additional attractions such as Garden of Morning Calm or Petite France, a Nami Island day tour can save time and simplify transportation.

Travelers who want to combine multiple attractions in a single day may also prefer a guided package that includes destinations such as Petite France or the Garden of Morning Calm.
👉 Check Nami Island Day Tour Packages from Seoul
Nami Island is one of the most popular day trips from Seoul during autumn. If you’re planning to base yourself in the capital before exploring Korea’s fall foliage destinations, my guide to Best Areas to Stay in Seoul for First-Time Visitors can help you choose the most convenient neighborhood.
2.Garden of Morning Calm (Gapyeong)
Located near Nami Island, the Garden of Morning Calm is one of the most popular autumn day-trip destinations from Seoul. During fall, the gardens are filled with colorful maple leaves, seasonal flowers, and beautifully landscaped walking paths.
Many travelers combine Nami Island and the Garden of Morning Calm in a single day, making it an excellent option for those who want to experience more of Gapyeong’s autumn scenery.
Best Time to Visit
Late October to Early November
Highlights
- Colorful autumn gardens
- Easy walking paths
- Great photography opportunities
- Popular Nami Island combination itinerary

3. Seoraksan National Park
If you only have time to visit one mountain during autumn, Seoraksan should be at the top of your list.
The dramatic granite peaks combined with brilliant red and orange foliage create some of the most spectacular autumn scenery in Korea. In fact, many locals consider Seoraksan the official start of Korea’s autumn foliage season. One of my favorite viewpoints is the cable car area, which offers incredible panoramic views without requiring a strenuous hike.
Highlights
Korea’s earliest foliage season
Stunning mountain landscapes
Scenic cable car rides
Beautiful hiking trails
Best Time to Visit
Early October to mid-October
Travel Tip
Accommodation in Sokcho can sell out weeks in advance during peak foliage season.
While it’s possible to visit Seoraksan independently using buses from Seoul, the journey can take several hours and may require multiple transfers depending on your starting point. During the autumn foliage season, many travelers choose a Seoraksan day tour from Seoul to maximize their time and avoid transportation logistics.
A guided day trip can be particularly convenient for first-time visitors, as transportation is arranged for you and many tours combine Seoraksan with other scenic stops in Gangwon-do. If you’re short on time or prefer a hassle-free experience, it’s worth comparing available options before your trip

4. Naejangsan National Park
When Koreans talk about the best autumn foliage in the country, Naejangsan is usually part of the conversation.
The park is famous for its intense red maple leaves that create almost unreal-looking landscapes during peak season.
Unlike Seoraksan’s dramatic mountain scenery, Naejangsan is known for colorful foliage corridors, temple surroundings, and peaceful walking trails.
Highlights
Brilliant red maple trees
Traditional temple scenery
Photogenic walking paths
Excellent fall photography opportunities
Best Time to Visit
Late October to early November
Travel Tip
Naejangsan is located in Jeollabuk-do, making it one of the more challenging autumn foliage destinations to visit on a day trip from Seoul. While independent travel is possible using KTX and local transportation, the journey can be time-consuming, especially during peak foliage season when visitor numbers increase significantly.
For travelers with limited time, a Naejangsan National Park day tour from Seoul can be a convenient option. Transportation is arranged for you, allowing more time to enjoy the autumn scenery rather than navigating train schedules and local bus connections.
If you prefer a more flexible itinerary, a private tour to Naejangsan from Seoul may be worth considering, particularly for families, small groups, or photographers hoping to visit multiple viewpoints during peak foliage season.

5. Jangtaesan Forest (Daejeon)
One of Korea’s most underrated autumn destinations is Jangtaesan Forest in Daejeon.
Many international visitors have never heard of it, but locals often visit specifically for its towering metasequoia trees and suspension skywalk. The forest feels peaceful compared to some of Korea’s more famous autumn destinations.
Highlights
Metasequoia forest
Scenic skywalk
Less crowded atmosphere
Easy access from Daejeon
Best Time to Visit
Late October to Mid-November
Travel Tip
Although Jangtaesan Forest is located in Daejeon and can be reached independently by KTX and local transportation, many international visitors find the logistics less straightforward compared to destinations like Nami Island or Seoraksan.
If you’d rather avoid navigating public transportation, consider joining a Daejeon day trip from Seoul or booking a private tour that includes Jangtaesan Forest and other attractions in the region. This can be a convenient option during peak autumn foliage season, especially for travelers with limited time in Korea.

6. Hwadam Botanic Garden (Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do)
Hwadam Botanic Garden has become one of Korea’s most popular autumn attractions in recent years.
The garden is beautifully landscaped with winding paths, ponds, bridges, and colorful trees. The monorail ride offers fantastic views over the entire property.
Highlights
Monorail experience
Family-friendly walking routes
Vibrant autumn colors
Excellent photography spots
Best Time to Visit
Mid-October to early November
Travel Tip
Advance reservations are strongly recommended during peak season. Autumn weekends often sell out quickly, especially when the foliage reaches its peak colors.
While Hwadam Botanic Garden can be visited independently from Seoul, securing admission tickets and coordinating transportation can sometimes be challenging during the busy autumn season. Many travelers choose a Hwadam Botanic Garden day trip from Seoul to simplify the experience and avoid worrying about reservations and transfers.
For couples, families, or visitors with limited time in Korea, a guided day tour can be one of the easiest ways to enjoy the garden’s famous autumn scenery. Some tours also include nearby attractions in Gyeonggi-do, making for a full day of sightseeing outside the city.
7. Odaesan National Park
Odaesan offers a quieter autumn experience compared to Seoraksan.
The area surrounding Woljeongsa Temple is especially beautiful, featuring a picturesque fir tree road framed by autumn colors. K-drama fans may also recognize the famous Woljeongsa Fir Tree Forest Path, which served as a filming location for the popular drama Goblin (Guardian: The Lonely and Great God).
Best Time
Early to mid-October
Best For
Travelers seeking a peaceful autumn atmosphere
Temple lovers
K-drama fans
Nature photographers
Travel Tip
Odaesan is a great choice for travelers who want to experience Korea’s autumn colors without the large crowds often found at Seoraksan. Because public transportation can take time, some visitors choose to join an Odaesan National Park day tour from Seoul to simplify the journey and maximize their sightseeing time.
For travelers interested in temple architecture, mountain scenery, and autumn foliage in a single trip, a guided day tour or private excursion can be a convenient option.
8. Hallasan Mountain (Jeju Island)
Jeju’s Hallasan offers a unique autumn experience that differs from mainland Korea.
The volcanic landscape combined with colorful foliage creates a scenery that feels completely different from Korea’s northern mountain regions.
Best Time
Late October to early November
Best For
Nature lovers and hikers visiting Jeju Island.
Travel Tip
Unlike many autumn foliage destinations on the mainland, visiting Hallasan usually requires additional transportation planning once you arrive in Jeju. Travelers who are unfamiliar with the island often choose to rent a car, while others prefer joining a guided Hallasan hiking tour or a private Jeju day tour that includes transportation and local insights.
For first-time visitors, a guided experience can be especially helpful when navigating trail options, weather conditions, and transportation to the trailheads.
Many visitors combine Hallasan’s autumn scenery with a few days exploring Jeju Island. If you’re planning an extended stay, check out my guide to Best Areas to Stay in Jeju for First-Time Visitors.
