Hi! Just KTravel here 👋

ToggleI’ve been exploring South Korea since 2014, living here for over 6 years, and I’m still discovering new places across the country. Through firsthand experiences, I share practical travel guides, detailed itineraries, transportation tips, and local recommendations to help travelers experience Korea beyond the usual tourist spots.

If there’s one thing I always tell friends before they visit South Korea, it’s this: Download the right apps before your flight.
Many travelers arrive expecting Google Maps, Google Translate, Uber, and other familiar apps to work exactly the same way they do at home. Then reality hits. Google Maps has limited functionality for walking and public transportation directions in Korea. Restaurant reservations often require Korean platforms. Taxi-hailing works differently. Even ordering food can be challenging without the right apps installed.
After living in South Korea for more than six years and exploring the country since 2014, I’ve found that having the right apps can make your trip significantly easier. Whether you’re visiting Seoul for a few days or planning a multi-city Korea itinerary, these are the apps I recommend downloading before your trip.

Before Anything Else: Get Internet Access
Most of these apps require internet access to function properly.
I strongly recommend arranging your SIM card, eSIM, or pocket WiFi before arrival so you can start using these apps as soon as you land.

1. Naver Map (My Top Recommendation)
If I could only recommend one Korea travel app, it would be Naver Map.
Most first-time visitors assume Google Maps works perfectly in Korea. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.
Due to mapping data restrictions, Google Maps often struggles with:
Walking routes
Public transportation directions
Detailed local navigation
Naver Map is what many locals actually use.
Why I Recommend It
Accurate walking directions
Bus and subway routes
Restaurant information
Real-time navigation
English interface available
Reviews and photos
I use Naver Map almost daily and find it especially useful when exploring new neighborhoods or finding restaurants.
Best For
Seoul sightseeing
Finding restaurants
Walking directions
Day trips
Public transportation
2. Kakao Map
Kakao Map is another excellent navigation app.
Some travelers prefer Kakao Map because of its interface, while others prefer Naver Map.
Personally, I use Naver Map more often, but I still keep Kakao Map installed as a backup.
Why Download Both?
Sometimes one app displays a location more clearly than the other.
Having both gives you a backup option if you’re having trouble finding a destination.
Best For
Navigation
Local businesses
Alternative route planning
Naver Map vs Kakao Map
Feature | Naver Map | Kakao Map |
English Support | Excellent | Good |
Walking Directions | Excellent | Excellent |
Public Transport | Excellent | Excellent |
Restaurant Information | Excellent | Very Good |
Tourist Friendly | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
My recommendation: Download both, but use Naver Map as your primary app.
3. KakaoMetro (or Seoul Subway)
Korea’s subway system is fantastic, but it can look overwhelming at first. KakaoMetro simplifies everything.
Features
Subway route planning
Transfer information
Estimated travel times
Exit information
Fare estimates
When I first started exploring Korea beyond Seoul, apps like this saved me countless hours.
Perfect For
Seoul
Busan
Daegu
Daejeon
Gwangju
Any city with a subway network.
4. Papago
Papago is probably the most important language app for Korea. Developed by Naver, it’s specifically optimized for Korean translation.
Why Papago Beats Google Translate in Korea
In my experience, Papago handles:
Korean menus
Signs
Everyday conversations
Local expressions
much better than Google Translate.
Useful Features
Camera translation
Voice translation
Image translation
Text translation
Conversation mode
I still use Papago regularly when I encounter unfamiliar Korean words or regional expressions.
5. Kakao T
Kakao T is Korea’s most popular transportation app. Think of it as Korea’s version of Uber.
What You Can Use It For
Taxis
Premium taxis
Chauffeur services
Parking information
If you’re staying out late in Seoul or Busan, Kakao T becomes extremely useful.
Great For
Airport transfers
Night travel
Areas with limited public transportation
6. Uber Korea
Many travelers are surprised to learn that Uber does operate in Korea.
However, it works differently from some countries.
Uber often connects users with licensed taxis rather than private drivers.
Why Install It?
If you’re already familiar with Uber, it’s a convenient backup option to Kakao T.
7. K-Ride
K-Ride was designed specifically for international travelers.
Why Tourists Like It
Foreign credit cards accepted
English-friendly interface
Easier setup for visitors
For some travelers, K-Ride can be simpler than navigating local taxi apps.
8. Visit Korea App
The official tourism app from the Korea Tourism Organization.
What You’ll Find
Attractions
Festivals
Events
Suggested itineraries
Tourist information
While I don’t use it daily, it’s a useful planning resource for first-time visitors.
9. Visit Seoul App
If Seoul is your main destination, this app can be helpful.
Features
Attraction guides
Walking routes
Event information
Cultural activities
It’s particularly useful for travelers spending most of their trip in Seoul. If you’re still deciding where to stay, check out my guide:

10. Klook
I recommend Klook to almost every visitor because it makes booking many Korea travel essentials quick and convenient. Many attractions, airport transfers, and tours are often available at discounted online prices, and you can book everything before arriving in Korea.
Why I Like It
Attraction and activity discounts
Airport transfers
KTX train tickets
Korea SIM cards and eSIMs
Day tours and seasonal activities
Easy mobile vouchers
Popular Korea Bookings
I’ve personally found some surprisingly good deals compared to buying tickets on-site, especially for theme parks and transportation.

11. Agoda
When it comes to booking accommodation in South Korea, Agoda is one of the platforms I use most often to compare hotel prices. Whether you’re looking for a hotel in Seoul, a beachfront stay in Busan, a guesthouse in Jeju, or a budget-friendly option near a KTX station, Agoda usually has a wide range of choices across the country.
Why I Like It
Large selection of hotels, guesthouses, and apartments
Frequent discounts and member deals
Detailed guest reviews and ratings
Flexible booking options on many properties
Easy price comparison between different accommodation types
One feature I find particularly useful is the ability to compare properties in different neighborhoods before booking. This can help first-time visitors decide whether staying in areas like Myeongdong, Hongdae, Gangnam, or Insadong makes the most sense for their itinerary.
Before making a reservation, I always recommend reading recent guest reviews and checking the property’s location on Naver Map. A cheaper hotel isn’t always the best value if it adds significant travel time to the places you plan to visit.
If you’re still deciding where to stay, you may find my Best Areas to Stay in Seoul for First-Time Visitors (2026 Guide) helpful, especially if you’re choosing between Seoul’s most popular tourist neighborhoods.

Pro Tip
Accommodation prices in Korea can increase significantly during:
Cherry blossom season (March–April)
Summer vacation (July–August)
Autumn foliage season (October–November)
Major Korean holidays such as Chuseok and Seollal
If you’re traveling during these periods, booking several weeks or even months in advance can often provide more choices and better rates.
12. Korail Talk
If you’re planning to visit cities beyond Seoul, you’ll probably ride the KTX at least once during your trip. The KTX is Korea’s high-speed train network and one of the fastest ways to travel between major cities such as Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, and Gyeongju.
Useful For
Booking KTX tickets
Viewing train schedules
Checking seat availability
Managing reservations
Popular routes can sell out during weekends, holidays, and peak travel seasons, so booking in advance is often a good idea.
Alternative:
Some travelers prefer booking KTX tickets through Klook because the booking process feels more familiar and is available in multiple languages.

13. Discover Seoul Pass
This is worth considering if you’re planning multiple paid attractions in Seoul.
Includes
Attraction entry
Transportation benefits
Tourist discounts
Is It Worth It?
The Discover Seoul Pass can be a good value for first-time visitors who plan to visit several popular attractions in Seoul over a few days. However, it’s not automatically the cheapest option for every itinerary. I always suggest checking which attractions are included before purchasing to see if it matches your travel plans.

If you’re still planning your Seoul itinerary, you may also find my guide on Best Areas to Stay in Seoul for First-Time Visitors (2026 Guide) helpful, especially if you’re deciding which neighborhoods and attractions to prioritize during your trip.
14. Visit Busan Pass
The Busan equivalent of the Discover Seoul Pass.
Good For
First-time Busan visitors
Attraction-heavy itineraries
Short Busan trips
The pass includes entry to many of Busan’s most popular attractions, making it worth considering if you plan to visit several paid sights during your trip.
Why It May Be Worth It
If you’re planning to visit attractions such as observatories, cable cars, cruises, or museums, the pass can help you save money compared to purchasing individual tickets.
Before purchasing, I recommend checking the latest list of included attractions and comparing the total cost against your planned itinerary.

If you’re visiting Busan for the first time, choosing the right neighborhood can also make sightseeing much easier. I recommend reading my Best Areas to Stay in Busan for First-Time Visitors (2026 Guide) to help decide whether Haeundae, Seomyeon, Nampo, or Gwangalli is the best base for your trip.
15. Baemin Korea's most famous food delivery app.
Korea’s most famous food delivery app.
Reality Check for Tourists
While some international visitors are able to use Baemin, the experience can still be challenging for short-term travelers due to language, payment, and address verification requirements.
If you’re staying in a hotel, many travelers find it easier to ask the front desk for assistance or order through delivery services recommended by their accommodation.
Why Mention It?
Food delivery is a huge part of daily life in Korea, and Baemin is one of the country’s most popular delivery apps. If you’re staying for an extended period or are comfortable navigating Korean apps, it can be a useful option.
16. Catchtable
One of my favorite recommendations for food lovers.
Many famous restaurants in Korea now use Catchtable.
What It Does
Restaurant reservations
Remote queueing
Waitlist management
Why It Matters
Some popular restaurants can have waiting times of one to three hours. Using Catchtable allows you to join a queue before arriving. This is especially helpful in trendy Seoul neighborhoods such as:
Seongsu
Gangnam
Hongdae
Jamsil
My Recommended Download Order
If you’re short on time, download these first:
Must-Have Apps

Tips for Using Korea Travel Apps
1.Download Everything Before Your Flight
App store access and setup are often easier before arriving.
2.Create Accounts Early
Apps like Catchtable and Kakao T may require verification.
3.Save Offline Screenshots
Keep screenshots of:
Hotel address
Booking confirmations
Airport transfer details
4.Bring a Backup Navigation App
I recommend installing both Naver Map and Kakao Map.
Navigation, translation, and transportation apps can drain your battery surprisingly fast during full sightseeing days.

Final Thoughts
One thing I’ve noticed after years of living and traveling around South Korea is that the country is incredibly easy to explore once you have the right apps.
Many of the frustrations first-time visitors experience—getting lost, struggling with transportation, waiting hours for restaurants, or dealing with language barriers—can often be avoided with a few downloads before departure.
If you’re preparing for your first Korea trip, I would prioritize Naver Map, Papago, KakaoMetro, Kakao T, and Klook. Those five apps alone will make a huge difference once you arrive. A few minutes of preparation before your flight can save you hours of confusion during your trip.
