Jeju City is usually the easiest base for first-time travelers because it’s near the airport and transportation hub, while Seogwipo is better for scenic coastal attractions and waterfalls.

✈️ 1. Jeju City — Best for First-Time Visitors

If you’re visiting Jeju for the first time, this is honestly the safest and easiest choice.

I usually recommend Jeju City to travelers who:

arrive late at night
only have 2–4 days
don’t want complicated transportation
prefer convenience stores, restaurants, shopping, and easy buses nearby

Most airport hotels are here, and many tours also start from this area.

I personally stayed at:

My Experience Staying Near Jeju Airport:

Staying near the airport made things WAY easier after a late evening flight. One thing first-time visitors don’t realize:
Jeju public transportation is not as convenient as Seoul. Buses can take a long time, and some tourist spots are very far apart. That’s why staying near the airport for your first or last night is honestly a smart move.

At Shinshin Hotel Jeju Airport, I liked how convenient everything felt:

-convenience stores nearby

-easy taxi access

-airport bus options

-restaurants within walking distance

It’s not a luxury hotel, but practical for travelers who prioritize location.

Another stay I personally enjoyed near the airport was Jeju Judith Pension near Iho Tewoo Beach.

Compared to airport business hotels, this stay felt much more relaxing and “Jeju-like” because of the ocean view atmosphere and quieter surroundings.

If Jeju City feels practical and convenient…

Seogwipo feels like the “real vacation” part of Jeju.

This is personally my favorite area to stay on the island.

You’ll be closer to:

waterfalls
coastal cliffs
scenic cafés
Jungmun Resort area
slower and quieter atmosphere

I stayed at:

The Shilla Jeju

And honestly…
this was one of my favorite hotel experiences in Jeju.

The resort atmosphere felt completely different from city hotels in Seoul.

The pools, gardens, ocean views, and overall vibe made it feel like an actual escape.

👉 I recommend booking activities in advance during summer and autumn because popular tours can sell out quickly.

Who Should Stay in Seogwipo?

I’d recommend Seogwipo if:

you love nature
want a slower trip
enjoy cafés with ocean views
plan to explore waterfalls and coastal spots
are visiting Jeju as a couple or family

Many travelers online also recommend Seogwipo because attractions are more scenic and relaxing compared to Jeju City.

🌅 3. Aewol — Best for Cafes & Coastal Drives

If you’ve seen aesthetic Jeju café photos on Instagram…

there’s a high chance they were taken in Aewol.

This area is famous for:

ocean-view cafés
sunset coastal roads
trendy restaurants
slower “healing trip” atmosphere

But personally?

I only recommend Aewol if:
✅ you rent a car
OR
✅ hire a private tour guide

Transportation here is much harder without one.

Aewol is honestly one of my favorite areas for slow travel days.

I’d recommend:

renting a car
doing a private taxi tour
or joining a west Jeju day trip

because attractions here are more spread out compared to Seoul.

🚗 IMPORTANT: Rent a Car or Hire a Private Tour Guide

This is probably the MOST important Jeju tip in this entire guide.

Jeju is NOT like Seoul.

You cannot rely on subways because there are none.

And buses can take a very long time between attractions.

If possible:
✅ rent a car
OR
✅ hire a private English-speaking tour guide

Especially if:

you’re traveling with family
visiting multiple regions
have limited time
want less stress

A lot of travelers online also mention that splitting stays or renting a car makes Jeju much easier to explore.

Honestly, Jeju becomes MUCH more enjoyable once transportation stress is removed.

Jeju is bigger than it looks on Google Maps./Naver Map.

Don’t book one hotel for the entire island unless you’re okay with long travel days.

✔ Ocean View Hotels Are Worth It

Jeju sunsets honestly hit different.

Even waking up with an ocean view changes the whole vibe of the trip.
