🍂 Best Autumn Day Trips from Seoul: Hwadam Forest, Seoraksan, Nami Island, Naejangsan & More
By Richelle (JustKTravel) • Updated Oct 2026
Table of Contents
ToggleSeoul looks beautiful once the leaves start changing, but some of Korea’s most impressive fall colors are outside the capital.
A couple of hours outside the city brings you to Hwadam Forest’s maple groves, Seoraksan’s mountain trails, Nami Island’s tree-lined roads, or the historic walls of Suwon. Later in the season, Naejangsan becomes one of the places to consider when the goal is deep red and yellow maple foliage.
I’ve lived in Korea for years, and one thing I’ve learned about autumn trips is that the calendar matters almost as much as the destination. Seoul may still be green while the mountains farther north are already turning. A few days of rain or strong wind can also change the appearance of a forest surprisingly quickly.
Rather than choosing a place because of one perfect autumn photo, match the destination to your travel dates and leave a little flexibility in the schedule.
For the wider 2026 foliage forecast, see 2026 Korea Autumn Foliage Forecast: When & Where to See Peak Fall Colors.
🍁 Before booking: Fall color dates change from year to year. Recent local photos and weather conditions are especially useful when a destination requires several hours outside Seoul.
🍁 Autumn Day Trips from Seoul: Quick Guide
Destination | From Seoul | Highlights | DIY Difficulty | Usual Autumn Window |
1.5–2.5 hrs | Maple forests | Moderate | Mid–late October
2.5–3.5 hrs | Mountains + hiking | Moderate–Hard | Early–late October
1.5–2 hrs | Tree-lined paths | Easy–Moderate | Mid–late October
1.5–2 hrs | Gardens + photography | Moderate | Mid–late October
1.5–2 hrs | Rail bike + countryside | Moderate | Mid–late October
1.5–2.5 hrs | Nature + attractions | Moderate | Mid–late October
1–1.5 hrs | Fortress + autumn walks | Easy | Late Oct–early Nov
3–4+ hrs | Maple foliage | Hard | Late Oct–mid Nov
Jangtaesan Forest | 2.5–3.5+ hrs | Late-season foliage | Hard | November |
These are general seasonal windows. Actual foliage depends on weather and local conditions.
Quick picks: Choose Hwadam Forest for maple scenery, Seoraksan for hiking, Nami Island for an easy classic autumn outing, Suwon for the easiest DIY option, and Naejangsan if you’re traveling later in the season.
🌳 1. Hwadam Forest
Hwadam Forest in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, is known for its wooded paths, landscaped gardens, maple trees and Hwadam monorail. It’s ideal for a slower autumn outing, with plenty of seasonal scenery without requiring a demanding hike.
From Seoul, allow roughly 1.5–2.5 hours, depending on traffic and your starting point.
🍁 Hwadam in October
Maple trees are one of the main reasons people visit in autumn, while the gardens and forest paths add variety to the walk.
A typical visit includes:
🍁 Maple groves
🌲 Forest paths
🚋 Hwadam Forest monorail
🌿 Seasonal gardens
📸 Photography spots
⚠️ Hwadam Forest Reservations
Advance reservations are strongly recommended, especially during peak autumn foliage season. Tickets are booked through the official NOL reservation system, and your entry time is tied to your reservation.
On-site tickets may be available if spots remain, but walk-in entry is not guaranteed. For a smoother trip, book ahead or join an organized day tour from Seoul.
For international visitors, an organized Hwadam Forest day trip through Klook can be a convenient option, especially if you prefer not to arrange transportation and reservations yourself.
Hwadam Forest autumn day trips on Klook
You can also hire a local tour guide or private driver-guide. If you need help arranging transportation to Hwadam Forest, message us for available guide options.
🍂 When the Leaves Usually Change
Mid-to-late October is the period to keep in mind for Hwadam Forest, although the exact timing varies each year.
🚗 Getting to Hwadam Forest
Most routes head toward Gonjiam before continuing to Hwadam Forest. If traveling independently, plan your transportation carefully and build the day around your Hwadam entry reservation.
For visitors who prefer a simpler option, a Klook day trip or local guide/private transfer can make the journey easier.
🏔️ 2. Seoraksan Mountain
Seoraksan is one of the places I’d put on the list for an early-October Korea trip.
The mountain is farther north and sits at a higher elevation than Seoul, so autumn colors often begin appearing there earlier.
From Seoul, expect roughly 2.5–3.5 hours each way.
For anyone planning to hike, that makes for a very full day.
🍂 Why early October matters here
During early or mid-October, Seoul may still have plenty of green trees.
Seoraksan may already have patches of red, yellow and orange, particularly in higher sections.
Color does not arrive across the entire mountain at once. Higher areas may change first, with lower sections following later.
Around Seoraksan and Sokcho
The usual route heads toward Sokcho, followed by a local connection to the national park.
A same-day visit from Seoul is possible. Staying overnight in Sokcho makes the morning much more relaxed and gives you more daylight inside the park.
Places around the region include:
- 🍂 Seoraksan National Park
- 🏔️ Mountain and valley views
- 🚡 Cable car area
- 🛕 Sinheungsa Temple
- 🌲 Hiking trails
- 🌊 Sokcho
October foliage
A broad window runs from early to late October, although elevation and weather affect individual trails.
Before committing to the long ride from Seoul, recent mountain photos are helpful for seeing where color has started.
Seoraksan tours from Seoul
For this destination, a tour can save a significant amount of time because the Seoul–Sokcho route is already arranged.
Klook options include:
👉 Seoraksan National Park & Naksansa Temple Full-Day Tour
👉 Mt. Seorak National Park Autumn Foliage Day Tour from Seoul
👉 Seoraksan National Park & Nami Island Full-Day Tour
Read the schedule carefully before booking. A shorter itinerary with more time at Seoraksan may suit you better than one that tries to fit several distant stops into the same day.
For a private experience, message me for local guide details for Seoraksan or Sokcho.
🍁 3. Nami Island
Nami Island is one of the simpler autumn outings from Seoul.
No serious hiking is required. Wide paths, famous tree-lined sections, bicycle routes, cafés and riverside views make it easy to spend several hours exploring at your own pace.
From Seoul, the ride usually takes around 1.5–2 hours.
A relaxed Nami Island visit
Most of the appeal comes from walking around the island and enjoying the trees.
Popular spots include:
- 🍂 Metasequoia Lane
- 🌳 Ginkgo trees
- 🚶 Tree-lined paths
- 🚲 Bicycle routes
- 🌊 Riverside views
- ☕ Cafés
Visiting independently:
Train routes combined with local connections work well for DIY visitors. Direct shuttles and round-trip buses from Seoul are also available.
For Nami Island alone, I prefer leaving enough time to actually explore rather than squeezing several unrelated stops into the same afternoon.

🍂 Nami Island foliage
Mid-to-late October is the period many visitors have in mind for fall colors.
The exact week changes each year, so photos from the days immediately before your visit give a better picture than an old seasonal prediction.
Round-trip packages and combination tours:
A round-trip package handles the Seoul–Nami Island route without requiring you to arrange every connection yourself.
👉 Nami Island round-trip transportation options on Klook
For a busier itinerary:
👉 Nami Island All-in-One: Alpaca, Rail Bike, Garden of Morning Calm & More
Personally, I’d rather spend extra time around Nami Island than race through several places simply to fit them onto one itinerary.
🌿 4. Garden of Morning Calm
The Garden of Morning Calm offers a quieter setting, with landscaped gardens, walking paths, seasonal plants and mountains in the background. There is no need for a hiking-focused itinerary here. From Seoul, allow approximately 1.5–2 hours.
Around the garden:
Expect:
- 🌳 Colorful trees
- 🌺 Seasonal gardens
- 🏔️ Mountain views
- 📸 Photography areas
- 🌿 Walking paths
The garden also pairs naturally with other Gapyeong-area destinations, especially Nami Island.
Reaching the garden
The route heads toward Cheongpyeong, followed by a local connection to the garden.
Combining several Gapyeong sights requires more attention to timing. A short distance on the map doesn’t always mean a quick transfer, particularly when buses and queues are involved.
Mid-to-late October
Mid-to-late October is a useful period for autumn colors.
Pairing it with Nami Island:
A combined tour handles the movement between the two destinations.
🚂 5. Gangchon Rail Park
Gangchon Rail Park adds an activity to an autumn countryside outing. The rail bike route passes through rural landscapes with mountains, trees and seasonal colors along the way. From Seoul, allow about 1.5–2 hours.
What makes the visit different
The rail bike is the main activity, with the surrounding countryside providing the autumn backdrop.
Expect:
- 🚲 Rail bike route
- 🍂 Autumn countryside
- 🌳 Mountain views
- 🌊 Rural and riverside scenery
Reserve a rail bike ahead during busy autumn weekends, particularly when a specific departure time matters.
Getting to Gangchon:
Train services head toward the Gangchon area, followed by a local connection.
For a same-day return, save the departure schedule before leaving Seoul. Missing the final connection after a full day outside can turn a relaxed outing into a stressful evening.
Mid-to-late October
Mid-to-late October is the period to watch for fall colors around the countryside.
Combining Gangchon with other stops
Nami Island and the Garden of Morning Calm fit naturally into the same general area.
👉 Nami Island + Gangchon Rail Bike + Garden of Morning Calm
A package like this suits anyone who wants several Gapyeong stops without arranging every transfer separately.
🌲 6. Pocheon
Pocheon takes you away from the familiar Nami Island route and into a more spread-out part of Gyeonggi-do. Pocheon Art Valley is known for its turquoise lake and granite cliffs, while Sanjeong Lake has a quieter countryside setting. From Seoul, allow roughly 1.5–2.5 hours, depending on traffic and how many places are included.
Places Around Pocheon
- 🏞️ Pocheon Art Valley
- 💧 Cheonjuho Lake
- 🌳 Sanjeong Lake
- 🍂 Countryside views
- 🌿 Mountain scenery
The sights are spread out, so getting from one stop to another takes more planning than a day around Nami Island or Suwon.
Is Pocheon Suitable for DIY Travel?
Pocheon is not one of the more convenient autumn day trips from Seoul by public transportation.
Buses are available, but reaching several attractions in one day involves multiple connections and waiting between routes. Once you add the travel time between Pocheon Art Valley, Sanjeong Lake and other stops, the schedule becomes much more complicated.
A rental car gives you much more freedom, especially when visiting several places in the same day.
For visitors who do not plan to drive in Korea, a Klook day trip from Seoul is a much more practical way to see Pocheon. The route is arranged in advance, so there is no need to spend the day working around separate bus connections.
👉 Pocheon Autumn Day Tour from Seoul
Another option is booking a local tour guide or private driver-guide. This works particularly well if you want more flexibility with your stops or prefer having someone familiar with the area take you around.
Need a local tour guide for Pocheon? Message us for local guide details.
🍂 Autumn Colors in Pocheon:
Mid-to-late October is the general period to keep in mind for autumn colors. Weather conditions may shift the foliage dates, so recent local updates are useful when planning your visit.
Before booking a tour, pay attention to how much time is spent at each stop, not only how many attractions appear on the itinerary. With Pocheon, having enough time at each location makes a noticeable difference to the day.
🏯 7. Suwon
Suwon is much closer to Seoul than the other destinations here, making it a convenient option when you want history, autumn trees and a walk without spending most of the day on the road. The ride takes roughly 1–1.5 hours. Suwon Hwaseong Fortress is the main sight. The historic walls, Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, surrounding streets and local restaurants make it easy to fill a day without adding another major destination.
A simple DIY visit
Suwon is straightforward to reach by train or subway.
From Suwon Station, buses and taxis connect with the fortress area.
Around the historic center you’ll find:
- 🏯 Suwon Hwaseong Fortress
- 👑 Hwaseong Haenggung Palace
- 🍂 Autumn trees
- 🚶 Historic streets
- 📸 Fortress viewpoints
Late October into early November is a useful period for a walking-focused visit.
I especially like Suwon when I don’t want a rigid schedule. A morning around the fortress, lunch nearby and an afternoon exploring the surrounding streets is enough to fill the day.
For a guided history-focused visit:
🍂 8. Naejangsan National Park
Naejangsan requires more commitment from Seoul, but the maple foliage is exactly why many people make the trip.
The ride south can take 3–4 hours or more. Inside the park, expect maple-lined paths, mountain views and Naejangsa Temple.
Around Naejangsan
- 🍁 Maple-lined paths
- 🛕 Naejangsa Temple
- 🌲 Mountain views
- 🍂 Foliage tunnels
- 📸 Photography spots
Late October through November:
A broad window runs from late October to mid-November, with early to mid-November particularly important for travelers watching the maple colors.
Heavy rain or strong winds can change the trees quickly, so recent photos matter before committing to the long ride south.
Reaching the national park
A common route heads toward Jeongeup by train or other long-distance services, followed by a local connection to the park.
The return route deserves attention before departure. Several hours on the train plus the final connection to the park makes this a demanding DIY outing from Seoul.
Taking a tour:
A guided option handles the long-distance route, which is the main reason I’d compare tours for Naejangsan.
👉 Naejangsan autumn day tours from Seoul
Pay attention to the amount of time inside the park. For a place this far away, that matters much more than adding extra stops.
🍃 9. Jangtaesan Forest: A Late-November Option
Late November does not automatically mean autumn is finished everywhere in Korea. Jangtaesan Forest in Daejeon is one destination to keep in mind for a later-season visit, although the condition of the trees depends heavily on the year’s weather. From Seoul, expect roughly 2.5–3.5+ hours.
Around Jangtaesan
- 🍂 Autumn forest
- 🌲 Walking trails
- 🌿 Mountain views
- 📸 Seasonal landscapes
Rain and strong wind can change a forest quickly at this point in the season, so photos from the same week are particularly useful.
Reaching Jangtaesan
Travel from Seoul to Daejeon by train, then continue toward Jangtaesan using local buses or other local options.
The forest sits outside central Daejeon, so returning to Seoul the same evening requires a little more attention to the final connection.
Tour options:
👉 Daejeon Jangtaesan Forest & Jungang Market Discovery with Local Food
👉 Autumn Jangtaesan Forest & Sungsimdang Bakery Day Tour from Seoul
Both options save visitors from arranging the Daejeon route and the final connection to the forest.
🚍 DIY or Klook?
Some destinations on this list are simple to visit independently. Others take enough time on the road that a guided itinerary starts to make more sense.
Destination | DIY | Where a Tour Helps | Practical Choice |
Possible | Entry + route planning | Compare both
Long | Seoul–Sokcho route | Tour or overnight
Straightforward | Several stops | Either
Moderate | Nami Island combination | Compare itineraries
Moderate | Multiple Gapyeong stops | Tour simplifies transfers
More involved | Several attractions | Tour or rental car
Easy | Historical guide | DIY works well
Very long | Long-distance route | Tour saves time
Long | Daejeon connections | Compare both |
When comparing Klook options, the price is only one part of the decision.
Look through:
Meeting point → departure time → route → total hours → time at each stop → admission fees → meals → cancellation policy
A six-stop itinerary isn’t automatically better than a three-stop one. I’d rather have enough time at the main foliage spot than spend the afternoon moving from one place to another.
🏨 Where to Stay for Autumn Trip
For most Seoul itineraries, keeping one hotel as a base makes more sense than moving rooms every time you leave the city.
Nami Island, Hwadam Forest, Suwon and several other places are reachable from Seoul.
Popular bases include Myeongdong, Jongno, Insadong, Hongdae and Jamsil, with each neighborhood offering a different location and atmosphere.
See my Best Areas to Stay in Seoul for First-Time Visitors (2026 Guide) for a closer comparison.
When autumn foliage is the main reason for the trip, staying outside Seoul may make more sense.
My Best Areas to Stay in Korea for Autumn Foliage — Where to Stay by Destination covers places where a hotel closer to the mountains or foliage spots may save hours on the road.
When staying outside Seoul makes sense
Seoraksan: Sokcho is the obvious base when the national park is a major part of the itinerary.
Nami Island + Garden of Morning Calm: Gapyeong works well for a multi-day stay. A Seoul hotel still works perfectly fine for a normal one-day visit.
📅 Match Your Dates With the Foliage
Korea’s fall colors gradually move from northern and higher-elevation areas toward Seoul and farther south.
🍂 Early October
Northern mountains deserve attention first:
Seoraksan
Northern mountain areas
Higher-elevation destinations
Seoul may still have mostly green trees.
🍁 Mid-October
More destinations start entering the picture:
Seoraksan
Nami Island
Hwadam Forest
Garden of Morning Calm
Gangchon
🍂 Late October
The selection around Seoul becomes much wider:
Nami Island
Hwadam Forest
Suwon
Pocheon
Garden of Morning Calm
Seoul
🍁 Early November
Later-changing areas become more relevant:
Seoul
Suwon
Naejangsan
Southern Korea
🍂 Mid-to-late November
Consider:
Naejangsan
Jangtaesan
Jeju
Southern Korea

🍁 7 Things I Would Do Before Leaving Seoul
1. Keep the itinerary realistic
I’ve seen plans that try to fit Nami Island, Garden of Morning Calm, Rail Park, Petite France and several cafés into one day.
It looks manageable on a map.
Add queues, meals and transfers, and suddenly the afternoon is gone.
For most people, one major destination plus one nearby stop is plenty.
2. Know where the tour starts
Klook departures may leave from Myeongdong, Hongdae, Dongdaemun or another central location.
A 7 AM meeting point could mean leaving your hotel much earlier than expected, so factor that into your morning.
3. Use weekdays when possible
Popular foliage spots get very busy on autumn weekends.
A weekday usually gives you more room to walk, take photos and enjoy the trees without constantly working around crowds.
4. Use current foliage photos
An old forecast doesn’t tell the whole story.
Recent visitor photos, local weather reports and updates from the destination give you a much better idea of what you’ll see during your week.
This becomes particularly important later in the season.
5. Save the route home
For DIY outings, the return route matters just as much as getting there.
Save the last train, bus or local connection back to Seoul before leaving.
6. Dress for the destination
A cool morning in Seoul may feel very different from a mountain morning.
Seoraksan and other outdoor areas can be noticeably colder, especially early in the day.
Layers and comfortable walking shoes are more practical than relying on one heavy jacket.
For more packing ideas, see What to Wear in Korea During Autumn + Packing List.
7. Keep one flexible day
Foliage doesn’t always follow the calendar.
Leaves may arrive late. Heavy rain may move things along quickly. A destination may already be past its best when you arrive.
One open day gives you room to move things around instead of forcing the original schedule.
🍁 Which Outing Fits Your Plans?
👨👩👧 Traveling with kids
Nami Island + Garden of Morning Calm + Rail Bike
This combination mixes walking, outdoor scenery and activities without making hiking the main focus.
📸 Taking autumn photos
Hwadam Forest, Nami Island or Naejangsan
Your travel dates matter here because these locations reach their strongest colors at different points in the season.
🥾 Hiking
Seoraksan
Mountain trails and valley views make this the obvious pick for a hiking-focused autumn day. Give yourself enough time and keep an eye on the weather.
🏯 History and fall colors
Suwon Hwaseong
The fortress walls, palace grounds and surrounding streets make this a nice combination of sightseeing and autumn walking without leaving the Seoul area for hours.
🚗 Your own schedule
Pocheon
A rental car works particularly well when several countryside sights are on the same itinerary.
😌 Less route planning
Longer routes such as Seoraksan, Naejangsan, Pocheon and multi-stop Gapyeong itineraries are much simpler when the main transfers are already arranged.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best autumn day trip from Seoul?
There isn’t one answer for every itinerary.
Nami Island suits a relaxed visit with easy access to other Gapyeong sights. Seoraksan is better suited to mountain scenery and hiking. Hwadam Forest focuses on woodland and maple colors, while Naejangsan becomes particularly interesting later in the season.
Your travel dates should be part of the decision.
Can I visit Nami Island without a tour?
Yes. Train and local connections are available, and round-trip packages from Seoul offer another way to simplify the route.
How long does Nami Island take from Seoul?
Allow around 1.5–2 hours each way, depending on your starting point and route.
Can Seoraksan be visited in one day from Seoul?
Yes, although it makes for a long day.
An overnight stay in Sokcho gives you a much earlier start and more time inside the park.
Is Hwadam Forest nice in autumn?
Hwadam is known for its maple trees, wooded paths, gardens and monorail.
October is a busy period, so entry availability matters when building the rest of the itinerary.
Is Naejangsan too far from Seoul?
It is a long ride, but the maple foliage is the reason many visitors make the trip.
A tour handles the long-distance route, while an overnight stay gives you more time around the area.
Can I visit Pocheon without a tour?
Yes. Local buses are available, although the spread-out locations make a rental car or organized tour more convenient for a packed itinerary.
Is Suwon easy to visit from Seoul?
Yes. Trains and subways connect Seoul with Suwon, and the fortress area is straightforward to explore independently.
When should I take autumn outings from Seoul?
Early October: Seoraksan and other northern mountain areas.
Mid-to-late October: Nami Island, Hwadam Forest, Garden of Morning Calm, Gangchon, Pocheon and Seoul.
November: Naejangsan and destinations farther south become more relevant.
Should autumn tours be booked ahead?
Popular autumn weekends can fill quickly.
Before paying, pay attention to the departure location, cancellation policy, start time and the amount of time spent at the main destination.
🍂 Final Thoughts
Autumn is one of my favorite seasons for exploring Korea. A morning in Seoul can turn into an afternoon among maple trees, mountain trails, fortress walls or quiet countryside.
For a relaxed outing, Nami Island or Suwon keeps the route manageable. During the earlier part of October, Seoraksan gives you access to mountain colors before Seoul reaches its main foliage period. Later in the season, Naejangsan becomes an option for anyone willing to travel farther south for maple scenery. There is no need to collect every famous foliage spot in one trip.
Pick a couple that fit your dates, leave some breathing room in the itinerary, and stay flexible when the weather changes. That usually makes for a much more enjoyable autumn in Korea.
For a longer route, see my 10-Day South Korea Autumn Itinerary: Seoul, Nami Island, Naejangsan & Busan.
🍁 Pick the places that fit your dates, take your time once you arrive, and enjoy Korea at its most colorful.
