TogglePlanning a trip to South Korea this autumn?
If seeing Korea’s red maple leaves, golden ginkgo trees and mountain scenery is part of your plan, you’re probably wondering when you should actually visit.
This can be a little confusing because autumn doesn’t arrive across Korea all at once. The mountains in the north can start changing while Seoul is still mostly green, and by the time the foliage has passed its best in the capital, some southern destinations are only reaching their peak.
I’ve lived in Korea for years, and this is one thing I always tell people planning an autumn trip: don’t choose your destination based on one foliage date. Look at where you’ll be during that week.
In this guide, I’ll break down the 2026 Korea autumn foliage forecast by destination and travel period, including Seoul, Nami Island, Seoraksan, Naejangsan, Busan and Jeju. I’ll also cover where it makes sense to stay overnight, when a day trip is worth it, and how to check the foliage before you head out.
🍂 2026 update: Seoraksan recorded its first foliage on September 28, 2026. The rest of Korea will follow at different times through October and November. Forecast dates are useful for planning, but actual conditions can shift with weather.
🍁 When Is Autumn Foliage in Korea in 2026?
For a simple overview, think of the season like this:
Late September–early October: Northern mountain areas begin changing
Mid-October: Seoraksan and other higher-elevation areas
Late October: Nami Island and central Korea
Late October–early November: Seoul
Early–mid November: Naejangsan and southern areas
November: Some areas of southern Korea and Jeju can still have autumn colors
The 2026 VisitKorea forecast originally placed first foliage around October 3 at Seoraksan, October 23 at Bukhansan, October 28 at Jirisan and October 31 at Hallasan. Its estimated peak dates were around October 25 for Seoraksan, November 4 for Bukhansan, November 5 for Jirisan, November 11 for Naejangsan and November 13 for Hallasan.
However, the actual season can move. The Korea Meteorological Administration observed Seoraksan’s first foliage on September 28, earlier than the original forecast. So rather than booking your entire trip around one date, use these as travel windows.
🍂 2026 Korea Autumn Foliage Forecast at a Glance
Destination | First Foliage | Approx. Peak | Best For |
Seoraksan | Late Sep–early Oct | Mid–late Oct | Mountain scenery |
Nami Island | October | Late October | Easy autumn day trip |
Seoul | Late October | Late Oct–early Nov | First-time visitors |
Bukhansan | Late October | Early November | Hiking + city views |
Jirisan | Late October | Early November | Mountain scenery |
Naejangsan | Late Oct–early Nov | Early–mid Nov | Maple leaves |
Busan | Late Oct–Nov | Early–mid Nov | City + nature |
Hallasan, Jeju | Late October | Early–mid Nov | Mountain + island scenery |
These are planning estimates, not guaranteed dates. Foliage can develop differently depending on elevation, temperature, rain and wind.
🍁 First Foliage vs Peak Foliage: What's the Difference?
If you’ve never followed Korea’s foliage forecasts before, this is worth knowing.
First foliage does not mean the mountain is completely red and yellow.
The Korea Meteorological Administration considers the first foliage to have arrived when about 20% of the monitored mountain has changed color. Peak foliage is around 80%.
So if you’re visiting Korea specifically for colorful mountain scenery, don’t book your trip simply because a destination has reached its first foliage date.
For most travelers, the peak period is the most useful number. Even then, don’t expect every tree to change on exactly the same day. You can have a beautiful mix of green, yellow, orange and red, which is often how autumn actually looks when you’re walking around Korea.
📅 Where Should You Go Based on Your Travel Dates?
This is the easiest way to use the forecast.
Your Travel Dates | Places to Consider | What to Expect |
Oct 1–10 | Seoraksan, Gangwon-do | Look north for earlier colors |
Oct 11–20 | Seoraksan, Nami Island | Mountain areas change before Seoul |
Oct 21–31 | Nami Island, Seoul, central Korea | Autumn becomes more noticeable |
Nov 1–7 | Seoul, Bukhansan, central Korea | Good period for Seoul |
Nov 8–15 | Naejangsan, southern Korea, Jeju | Look farther south |
After Nov 15 | Southern Korea, Jeju | Later-season foliage may remain |
This is why I wouldn’t say that October is simply “the best month” for autumn in Korea. If you’re visiting October 5, I’d plan differently from someone arriving October 28.
🍁 If You're Visiting Korea in Early October
Early October is still relatively early for Seoul. If autumn foliage is one of your main reasons for visiting, I’d look toward Seoraksan and other northern mountain areas first. As of September 28, 2026, Seoraksan had already recorded its first foliage, making it one of the better places to consider at the beginning of October.
🍂 Seoraksan
Seoraksan is one of the first major areas to see autumn colors because of its elevation and location in Gangwon-do.
If you’re staying in Seoul, you can visit on a long day trip, but if autumn is your priority, I personally prefer staying overnight in Sokcho. You’ll be closer to the mountain and won’t have to spend the first part of your morning traveling from Seoul.
If you’re planning to stay overnight, check Sokcho hotels on Agoda and compare the location and cancellation policy.
Looking for a more personalized experience? Message me for local guide details if you’re interested in a private guide for Seoraksan or Sokcho.
🚍 Want a Stress-Free Seoraksan Day Trip?
If you’d rather not deal with transportation from Seoul, a guided day tour can make the trip much easier. A few options to check on Klook include:
Seoraksan National Park & Naksansa Temple Full-Day Tour — combines the mountain with Naksansa Temple.
Mt. Seorak National Park Autumn Foliage Day Tour from Seoul — a good choice if foliage is your main focus.
Seoraksan National Park & Nami Island Full-Day Tour — combines two popular autumn destinations in one day.
Tour schedules can vary by date, so check the itinerary and inclusions before booking.
🍂 Mid-to-Late October: Seoraksan, Nami Island & Central Korea
By mid-to-late October, autumn becomes much easier to enjoy outside the mountains. The 2026 VisitKorea forecast places Seoraksan’s peak around October 25, while Nami Island and other destinations around Gapyeong become increasingly popular for autumn day trips from Seoul.
🍁 Nami Island in Autumn
Nami Island is popular for a reason. You don’t need to be a serious hiker to enjoy it, and the tree-lined paths make it easy to spend a few hours walking around, taking photos and enjoying the autumn scenery.
If Nami Island is your main goal, you don’t necessarily need an organized tour. You can visit independently and spend most of the day exploring at your own pace. A round-trip bus from Seoul can also be a convenient option if you want to keep things simple without figuring out several train and bus connections.
For a full DIY plan, including transportation options and the ITX vs. subway comparison, see my Nami Island DIY Day Trip Guide (2026): How to Get There from Seoul.
🎟️ Want to See More Than Nami Island?
If you’d rather combine Nami Island with several nearby attractions in one day, an organized tour can save you the hassle of planning separate transportation.
One option to check on Klook is the Nami Island All-in-One: Alpaca, Rail Bike, Garden of Morning Calm & More, which combines Nami Island with other popular Gapyeong-area attractions.
You can also find packages that combine Nami Island with Garden of Morning Calm, Petite France or Gangchon Rail Park.
When comparing tours, check the meeting point, total duration, attractions included and cancellation policy. If you mainly want to enjoy Nami Island at your own pace, a simple round-trip option may suit you better than a packed itinerary.
🍁 Late October to Early November: Seoul
This is when I’d start paying much more attention to Seoul itself.
You don’t need to leave the city to see autumn.
Some good places to check include:
Namsan
Changdeokgung Palace
Gyeongbokgung Palace
Seoul Forest
Olympic Park
Seokchon Lake
Seoul Grand Park
For more locations, see my Best Places to See Autumn Foliage in Seoul guide.
One thing I’ve noticed while living here is that Seoul doesn’t change all at once either. One neighborhood can look very autumnal while another still has plenty of green trees. So if you have several days in Seoul, spread your foliage stops across the trip rather than trying to find everything in one afternoon.
🏨 Where to stay in Seoul
If you’re visiting Seoul mainly for sightseeing and also want to fit in one or two autumn day trips, staying somewhere central can save you a lot of time.
Myeongdong is convenient, but don’t assume it’s automatically the best choice for everyone.
Jongno, Insadong, Hoehyeon, Hongdae and Jamsil all have different advantages.
Before booking, compare the neighborhoods in my Best Areas to Stay in Seoul for First-Time Visitors guide.
🍂 Early November: Don't Give Up on Seoul
If your trip starts in early November, you haven’t necessarily missed autumn.
The forecast puts Bukhansan’s peak foliage around November 4, while Seoul’s parks, palace grounds, and streets may still show plenty of autumn color during the first week of November.
It’s also a good time to look farther south, where foliage may be reaching its peak later. In Korea, autumn moves gradually across the country, so one area can be past peak while another is still looking beautiful.
And if the weather isn’t ideal, you can easily mix sightseeing with other Seoul activities:
Seoul City Tour Bus — an easy way to see more of the city without planning every route.
Lotte World — a fun indoor option, especially for families or rainy days.
Hanbok Rental — a nice way to explore the palace areas and take autumn photos.
So don’t give up on Seoul just because you’re arriving in November. Check the foliage closer to your travel dates and keep your itinerary flexible.
🍁 November: Head South for Later Foliage
If you’re arriving in Korea in November, I’d start looking beyond Seoul.
🍂 Naejangsan
Naejangsan is one of the destinations I’d put high on the list for travelers who specifically want colorful maple scenery.
The 2026 VisitKorea forecast puts its peak around November 11.
The important thing to know is that Naejangsan isn’t a quick Seoul sightseeing stop.
If you only have five days in Korea, I’d think carefully before spending most of a day getting there.
But if autumn foliage is one of the main reasons for your trip, it can be worth the extra travel.
🚍 DIY or organized tour?
You have two realistic choices:
DIY: More flexibility, but you’ll need to plan the transportation yourself.
Organized tour: Less planning, and transportation is usually arranged for you.
For a seasonal destination like Naejangsan, I would compare the Klook autumn day trips available for your date and check exactly what is included.
If you’re planning a longer Korea trip, my 10-Day South Korea Autumn Itinerary: Seoul, Nami Island, Naejangsan & Busan shows one way to fit these destinations together without changing hotels every night.
🍂 Busan in Autumn
Busan feels different from Seoul during autumn.
You get the combination of the coast, cafés, markets, temples and mountain areas rather than one big “fall foliage destination.”
For autumn scenery, look at places such as:
- Geumjeongsan
- Beomeosa Temple
- Taejongdae
- Parks and wooded areas around the city
If Busan is part of your autumn itinerary, I’d give it at least a couple of nights.
If you’re going directly from Incheon Airport to Busan, my Incheon Airport to Busan: Complete Transportation Guide explains the main options.
And before booking your hotel, compare the different neighborhoods in Best Areas to Stay in Busan for First-Time Visitors.
If you’re traveling solo, I also have a separate Where to Stay in Busan for Solo Travelers guide.
🌊 Jeju in November
Jeju can be a good late-season option if you want to combine autumn scenery with a broader island trip. The 2026 VisitKorea forecast puts Hallasan’s peak around November 13, but you don’t need to climb Hallasan to enjoy Jeju in autumn.
You can combine:
🌿 Forests and autumn foliage
🌊 Coastal scenery and waterfalls
☕ Cafés and scenic roads
🍊 Tangerine-picking experiences
🌾 Silver grass and pink muhly
🚗 Getting Around Jeju
If you want to explore different parts of the island at your own pace, renting a car can be very convenient in Jeju. It gives you more flexibility to visit scenic roads, cafés, forests, and less-central attractions without depending on bus schedules.
If you don’t want to drive, joining a small-group day tour is another easy option, especially for a short stay.
Some autumn-focused tours to check on Klook include:
Jeju Seasonal Day Tour – Pink Muhly & UNESCO Sites (East/SouthWest/West) — combines seasonal scenery with major Jeju attractions.
Jeju Fall Foliage, Tangerine Picking, Pink Muhly & Silver Grass Tour — a nice choice if you want several classic autumn experiences in one day.
Hotel Pick-up Jeju Autumn Pink Muhly Day Tour – Small Group — convenient if you prefer a smaller group and hotel pick-up.
The bigger consideration is transportation. Jeju is spread out, so don’t choose a hotel just because it looks nice in photos. Think about which side of the island you’ll actually be exploring.
My Best Areas to Stay in Jeju for First-Time Visitors guide breaks down the main areas and which base may work best for your trip.
🏨 Where Should You Stay for an Autumn Foliage Trip?
Your accommodation can affect your sightseeing time more than you might expect.
Here’s the simple version:
Foliage Destination | Convenient Base | Why |
Myeongdong, Jongno, Insadong, Hoehyeon, Jamsil | Easy sightseeing + transportation
Seoul or Gapyeong | Seoul is flexible; Gapyeong is closer
Sokcho | Easier early start
Jeongeup / nearby | Less travel time
Seomyeon, Nampo, Haeundae | Different options for different itineraries
Jeju City or Seogwipo | Choose based on your route |
For hotels, I usually look at location first, then price.
A cheaper room isn’t much of a bargain if you’re spending an extra hour getting to every attraction.
If your dates are fixed, compare Agoda hotel prices, recent reviews and cancellation policies early, particularly for autumn weekends.
🎟️ Which Autumn Activities Should You Book?
You don’t need to pre-book everything in Korea. For normal Seoul sightseeing, I often prefer keeping some flexibility. For popular autumn day trips, though, it’s worth checking availability before you arrive.
For autumn, I’d especially look at:
- 🍁 Nami Island day tours
- 🌿 Nami Island + Garden of Morning Calm tours
- 🏔️ Seoraksan day trips
- 🍂 Naejangsan autumn tours
- 🌳 Hwadam Forest tours
- 🏯 Suwon Hwaseong day trips
- 🌾 Seasonal attractions and popular observatories
When comparing a tour, check:
Meeting point → transportation → duration → what’s included → cancellation policy
A tour that looks cheap can become less attractive if the meeting point is difficult to reach or you’re spending most of the day sitting on a bus. For autumn trips, I’d also check how much time you actually get at each destination before booking.
If you’re not comfortable navigating Korea’s regional buses or simply want a more relaxed day, a guided tour can be worth considering for some of these autumn spots.
🍁 How I Would Plan a Korea Autumn Trip
If I were planning around the foliage myself, I’d keep it simple.
5 days
Seoul — 4 nights
Add one day trip to Nami Island or another nearby autumn destination.
This keeps you from losing time changing hotels.
7 days
Seoul — 4 nights
Busan — 3 nights
You get city sightseeing, autumn scenery and the coast without trying to cover half the country.
10 days
Seoul → Nami Island → Naejangsan → Busan
This gives you more room to move south as the season progresses.
My 10-Day South Korea Autumn Itinerary goes into this route in much more detail.
🌦️ Why Autumn Foliage Dates Change
There are a few reasons you shouldn’t treat a foliage forecast like a train timetable.
Temperature affects when leaves change, and higher elevations usually change before lower areas. That is why Seoraksan can have autumn colors while Seoul still looks mostly green. Then there’s the weather after the leaves change.
Heavy rain or strong wind can make leaves fall earlier, while favorable conditions can help them stay on the trees longer.
The Korea Meteorological Administration tracks foliage at 21 major mountains and provides observation photos showing the progression of the season. For a mountain day trip, I’d check the latest conditions a few days before going.
🍂 What If You Don't Catch Peak Foliage?
Don’t worry too much about getting the exact “perfect” day.
The leaves don’t all change at once, so you may see green, yellow, orange, and red trees together. You might also arrive just after a windy or rainy day and find leaves covering the ground instead of the branches. That’s still part of autumn in Korea.
Even in late November, you can still find autumn scenery in places such as Jangtaesan Forest in Daejeon, depending on the year’s foliage conditions.
If you don’t want to plan the transportation yourself, you can also check these stress-free day trips from Seoul on Klook:
- Daejeon Jangtaesan Forest & Jungang Market Discovery with Local Food — combines autumn scenery with a chance to explore the local market and try regional food.
- Autumn Jangtaesan Forest & Sungsimdang Bakery Day Tour from Seoul — a convenient option if you want to visit Jangtaesan without arranging the transportation yourself.
And outside the famous foliage spots, you may find beautiful ginkgo-lined streets, quiet parks, or small neighborhood paths that weren’t even on your original itinerary. Those unexpected walks are often worth leaving some free time for.
📱 How to Check the Foliage Before Your Day Trip
A forecast from several weeks ago is useful for planning, but it shouldn’t be your only reference.
Before heading out:
- Check the latest foliage information.
- Check the weather forecast.
- Search the destination in Korean on Naver.
- Look at recent photos or local updates.
- Check the attraction or national park’s latest notices.
- Confirm transportation or tour availability.
This takes only a few minutes and can save you from traveling several hours for a view that has already changed.
🍁 What Should You Wear in Korea During Autumn?
Korea’s autumn weather can change quite a bit during the day.
A morning can feel cold, then become comfortable in the afternoon. Mountain areas can also feel noticeably cooler than Seoul. I prefer layers rather than bringing one heavy coat too early in the season.
A light jacket, sweater or cardigan is usually easier to manage, and comfortable shoes are a must if you’re visiting foliage spots. You may plan to take a few photos and walk around for an hour.
Then you look at your phone later and realize you’ve walked 15,000 steps. For a fuller packing list, see my What to Wear in Korea During Autumn + Packing List guide.
🧳 Before Your Autumn Trip to Korea
Autumn planning isn’t only about foliage.
Before your flight, check the current Korea entry requirements, especially if you’re unsure about visa requirements, K-ETA or the e-Arrival Card.
Once you arrive, my How to Get from Incheon Airport to Seoul guide can help you choose between the main airport transfer options.
If you’re heading straight to Busan, use my Incheon Airport to Busan transportation guide instead.
And if you’re still putting everything together, my Korea Travel Checklist is a good place to go through the practical things you need before departure.

🍁 Final Thoughts
Korea’s autumn season moves gradually from north to south, so your travel dates should influence where you go.
Coming in early October? Look toward Seoraksan and Gangwon-do.
Visiting in late October? Seoul and Nami Island become much more interesting.
Arriving in early or mid-November? Consider Naejangsan, southern Korea or Jeju.
And if you’re only spending a few days in Seoul, you don’t need to chase foliage across the country. There are plenty of beautiful autumn spots within the city, and you can add a one day trip if you want something different.
My advice is simple: use the forecast to choose your general timing, then check the latest local conditions before your foliage day.
That little bit of flexibility can make a big difference.
For your next step, start with my 10-Day South Korea Autumn Itinerary: Seoul, Nami Island, Naejangsan & Busan, or use my guides to where to stay in Seoul, Busan and Jeju if you’re still working out your route.
🍂 And leave yourself a little free time. Some of the nicest autumn scenery in Korea isn’t always the place you planned to visit.
