Summer in South Korea is hot, humid, busy… and honestly really fun.

A lot of travelers avoid visiting Korea during July and August because of the weather, but after living here, I think summer is actually one of the most exciting times to experience local festivals, beach events, concerts, and late-night food culture.

Some festivals are huge and wild, while others are more relaxed by the sea. If you’re planning a Korea trip in summer 2026, these are the festivals I genuinely think are worth adding to your itinerary.

1. Boryeong Mud Festival

My Experience Visiting Boryeong

The first time I went, I thought I’d spend maybe 1–2 hours there. I ended up staying almost the whole day.

The atmosphere near the beach after sunset was actually my favorite part. Everyone washes off, changes clothes, eats seafood, drinks cold beer, and just enjoys the summer night by the ocean.

It felt more like a beach vacation than just a festival.

I filmed this during a previous Boryeong Mud Festival visit. Events, performances, and activity zones may change for the upcoming 2026 festival.

If you only attend one summer festival in Korea, this is probably the one I’d recommend.

Yes, it’s touristy — but in a fun way.

The whole festival is basically giant mud pools, mud slides, beach parties, live music, and people running around completely covered in mud. It sounds chaotic… because it is.

But that’s honestly why people love it.

Helpful Tips Before You Go.

Bring:

Don’t Bring:

  • expensive bags
  • white shoes
  • anything hard to clean

Should You Join a Tour?

Honestly… for Boryeong, I think joining a tour can make things much easier — especially for first-time visitors.

Transportation back after the festival can get tiring and crowded, especially if you don’t speak Korean or you’re visiting solo.

A local English-speaking guide can help with:

  • transportation
  • festival tips
  • meeting points
  • avoiding confusion after the event
  • nearby food spots and beach areas

If you want a more stress-free experience, I personally think joining a local tour can make the trip much easier — especially for first-time visitors.

Where to Stay Before or After:

Many travelers stay in Seoul before heading to Boryeong.

If you’re still deciding where to stay:

Especially hotels near Seoul Station if travelers plan to leave early for tours. Check your travel date here.

📍 Location: Boryeong
📅 Expected Festival Period (2026): July 2026
(Official 2026 dates may change.)

Crowds enjoying Waterbomb Seoul summer music festival in Korea

2.Korea’s Biggest Summer Water Party

Waterbomb is basically a giant outdoor music festival mixed with water fights.

Expect:

  • loud music
  • water cannons
  • soaked crowds
  • K-pop & hip-hop performances
  • summer party energy everywhere

If you enjoy nightlife and concerts, this is probably one of the most exciting summer events in Korea.

Things Tourists Should Know:

This festival gets HOT. Even with all the water, standing outside for hours during Korean summer weather can feel exhausting.

Wear light clothes and stay hydrated.

Also: your phone WILL probably get wet at some point.

Buy a good waterproof pouch before going.

Good to Know:

Hotels in Seoul become expensive during big festival weekends.

I recommend booking earlier than usual if you’re visiting during Waterbomb dates.

If you still need help choosing areas:

Good areas for festival travelers:

  • Hongdae
  • Gangnam
  • Seoul Station

Check your travel date here.

3. Busan Sea Festival

My Favorite Summer Festival Atmosphere in Korea

Out of all the summer festivals, Busan honestly feels the easiest to enjoy.

You still get:

  • beach concerts

  • food stalls

  • summer nightlife

  • events by the ocean

But it feels less overwhelming compared to Seoul festivals. The sea breeze helps a lot too.

Why I Recommend Busan in Summer

Summer in Busan just feels different.

People stay out late near the beach, convenience stores are packed with travelers eating ramen outside, and the whole city feels more relaxed.

You can easily combine:

  • beach days

  • cafes

  • Sky Capsule rides

  • seafood markets

  • summer festivals

all in one trip.

Where to Stay in Busan:

I highly recommend booking accommodations early because Busan gets extremely busy during summer. Check your travel date here.

Activities You Can Combine in Busan:

Besides the festival itself, this is a great chance to book:

  • yacht tours

  • Sky Capsule rides

  • spa experiences

  • Busan night tours

Worth checking activities in advance here.

Night view during Busan Port Festival near Busan harbor waterfront

4. Busan Port Festival

What I Personally Like About It:

Busan at night during summer is honestly beautiful. The harbor lights, ocean breeze, and outdoor performances feel very different from Seoul’s fast-paced atmosphere.  If you want a festival experience without huge party crowds, this is a good option. A More Relaxed Summer Festival.

Compared to Waterbomb or Boryeong, this festival feels calmer and more local.

You’ll usually see:

  • harbor performances
  • food booths
  • evening concerts
  • cultural events

I think this one works especially well for:

  • couples
  • families
  • travelers who prefer slower travel

Summer weekends in Busan get booked surprisingly fast during festival season, especially near Haeundae and Gwangalli. If you already know your travel dates, I’d honestly reserve accommodations earlier than usual. Reserve in advance here.

Wangsan Marina Sea Festival near Incheon South Korea

5. Wangsan Marina Sea Festival (Incheon)

A Smaller Coastal Festival Near Seoul:

This festival is much less crowded compared to the famous summer festivals in Korea. The atmosphere feels more local, slower, and more relaxing.

You may see:

  • marina activities

  • yacht experiences

  • beach events

  • sunset views

  • small performances

Why It’s Good for Tourists:

Not everyone wants giant crowds and loud music during vacation. If you prefer a calmer summer experience near Seoul, this festival is a nice choice. It also works well as a day trip if you’re staying in Seoul or near Incheon Airport.

My Recommendation:

I honestly think this is one of the festivals where having a local guide can make the experience better.

Because it’s less touristy, transportation and schedules can sometimes feel confusing for visitors.

A local English-speaking guide can help you:

  • explore nearby coastal spots

  • find hidden cafes

  • explain the marina area

  • avoid transportation stress

  • combine nearby attractions in Incheon

This works especially well for couples, families, or small friend groups who want a more relaxed Korea summer experience.
